Help!
I just finished my new computer only to find that my onboard sound isn't working!
I have tried the motherboard connections and windows says that it is working and connected but no sound is being played through the jack?
Thanks

check all the I/O settings ...there could be a conflict.
Please do show more info regarding your 'new built' PC.

Have you tried the settings for the audio card via its native software?

I'm just using the onboard audio.
I have reinstalled the drivers for that and when I plug the headphones into the mic jack, it detects it by not for the headphone jack.
As I am completly new to Windows 8, how would i check for a conflict?

OK, I have fixed it (kind of).
Audio now works when headphones are plugged into the Mic jack. No idea why but it will suffice for now.

are you using an video card with HDMI make sure the onboard sound device is set as the default device other wise win 7/8 defaults HDMI audio out

1: right click the speaker icon by the clock
2: select playback devices
3: in the window that opens select the onboard audio device
4: click on the "set default" button at the bottom right

hopefully this should sort your problem out. If it doesn't then check to make sure the drivers you're using are win 8 compatible as if they're not this could be your problem

what onboard sound does your motherboard use ie: realtek etc etc as without actually knowing the make does make the job quite difficult to diagnose

I have a graphics card installed but have set it to onboar audio as it's not working (separate issue) and I'm not using an HDMI cable anyway.
Any reasons why only the mic jack is working?

What the motherboard make and model? Have you read up it's manual on header and jumper configurations?

I have a motherboard with a 'front panel connector' header, but when I got a case for it and connected up the front connectors I found that the rear audio is actually just connected to that header by jumping it's pins and therefore I couldn't have both.

Since the mic works I doubt that's happening here, but, yeah. Check the manual, check your connections (internal and external), check the bios, check the drivers, then check windows. And let us know what some of your hardware components are, maybe someone knows/can find info on an issue specific to your hardware.

The mic jack is set to work as an output as defined by your audio card software.
What is the name of your audio card ? Is there any software such as IDT ?

Please somehow in windows 8 get to the control panel and properties for the audio, as I mentioned before there will be specific software that has been installed for the sound card and thats what sets the audio outputs.
Did you buy the soundcard new? Did it come with a CD with drivers OR have you checked the manufacturers website to see how / what the software is?

Sorry,
my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z87-HD3.
I am not sure what audio chip it is, only that it is made by Realtek.
I will get back to you on the software. When i plug the headphones in, it detects them when plugged into the mic, but not the headphone jack.
Would it be a driver or a hardware issue?

As mentioned above... check the software ..... look audio software/drivers for somthing "Realtek" or IDT.
sorry I dont know much about windows 8, but in the classic windows you can usually find this audio software on your taskbar on its own or accessed via the volume control (or control panel). It is this software which will be telling ALL the audio inputs and outputs on your motherboard what to do. It will be easy to change and using a graphical interface.

Thanks!
Checked my manual online and it had instructions on how to (hopefully) fix it.
Can't do it now but will try it when I get home.
Thanks again for the pointers!
This is my first build and I would have had no idea on how to fix this on my own.
