Hi

I have just installed a APC Smart UPS 750 which i have plugged in my Desktop PC, Monitor, Analogue cordless phone and my Telecom VDSL Router into. With the current loading it will give about 15mins of run time with the PC on and about 2 and a half hours with just the other 3 devices on.

I have installed the latest version of Powerchute and put the server, and agent onto my desktop PC. Its all configured and can see the UPS etc. I have been using the web page for configuring the shutdown settings of the ups and monitoring its status

My problem is im having trouble getting it to shutdown things like it want it to.

I want the desktop to turn off after about 4 minutes to conserve power and allow the router and phone to remain on until the UPS gets to the point where it has to shut its self down.

Now im not sure how to accomplish this. I could get the shutdown script (Standard one that comes with the software) on the computer to run properly so that shuts down as it should, but not after 4 minutes. and then the ups remains in a "UPS shutdown by USB state" and i cant get it out of that state unless i power cycle it, which is not what i want to be having to do.

i think some of the problem stems from the ups thinking that the desktop will be on the whole time so bases its shutdown times on the fully loaded state, and not when the desktop is shutdown.

any help would be much appreciated

Hi

What version of windowsdo you have?

Does the UPS show up as battery?

If so you may be able to set it up like a laptop and shut down using windows power management

You should then be able to remove the powerchute software hopefully fixing the other issue

Regards
Clint

Right that seems better

Just seems to shutdown rather abruptly though, no windows is shutting down or anything, closes a few problems then screen goes black and its off.

Thanks
Jason

Sounds more like hibernation or sleep

I'd double check the settings

i had the choice of sleep or power off, hibernation is disabled. when you power the computer back on it goes through POST and then windows load screens so its defiantly powered off

As long as it doesn't come up with a windows error when you restart then its probably fine :)
