Hi all

So I have just replaced my old GA-B855M-D3H mobo, which seemed to have gotten itself corrupted (when booting from cold start would reboot twice into the dual bios, and lose all o/c settings).

I bought a GA-Z97P-D3 mobo, due to the Z97 chip, and wtf? The same thing is happening! It isn't going into the dual bios, but it is beeping twice and then going to windows 10 with no issues. And has reset the o/c settings.

So - I currently have:

Mobo: GA-Z97P-D3

CPU: Pentium G3258

RAM: 16GB Kingston HyperX Blu

PSU: 500W Enermax Bronze NAXN

SSD - Samsung 500gb EVO 750

Video card - RX470 G1

The only difference from my old setup is the mobo and the RAM - I had a mix of Adata and G.Skill.

I've dumbed the o/c'ing down to simply changing the CPU multiplier to 42 (to get it to 4.2GHZ) - I didn't even change the VCORE from auto. When I have set that to 1.2v it makes no difference - it doesn't hold the settings.

Rebooting is fine - keeps them. Cold boot - they revert to defaults. I have cleared the CMOS to get it right back to scratch first and tried again - no difference.

Thing is - it's beeping twice (and showing the Gigabyte splash screen twice) even when I have restored the settings to optimised defaults.

RAM has tested fine through MemTest. And when the o/c settings are in place they are perfectly stable through PRIME95 testing.

And I have updated mobo bios to latest.

I have no idea where to go from here...

First thought is that the o/c is failing on a cold boot and therefore the mobo is deciding it is not stable and clocking back down to normal. Possibly a component issue. You might want to do some serious testing to see if it IS actually a stable overclock.

Thanks Brumfondl.

Other than Prime95 (which I ran for 8 hours) what would you suggest please?

Although if the mobo thinks a G3258 on only 4.2GHZ and 1.2V is unstable I have some real issues.

And that doesn't explain why the two beeps/splash screen showing twice even when on default settings...

EDIT: Ok, it's not just clearing the o/c defaults on cold boot - it's defaulting back to original settings totally. As in, when I go back into the bios it's asking me to set the language again.

And it's doing that even when there's no o/c settings.

I have taken out the Kingston RAM and put back in the original AData RAM, and it makes no difference. Still the same.

1) Its possible that one of the output voltages from power supply is low, or is taking a bit of time for it to become stable. If voltage is not stable it may decide to drop O/C settings.

2) Problem with graphics card. Can you try the computer with out the RX470?

1/ That's a possibility, but I did try another PSU and it still happened.

2/ I can't, no - my monitor is only VGA or DisplayPort, and the mobo doesn't have DisplayPort, and I don't have a VGA cable.

Ok, another clue.

When I apply o/c settings (a basic 42 multiplier with 1.2v), shut down and unplug the power supply completely - then when I start up, there's only 1 beep, and the o/c settings have been retained. Tried it twice, worked twice.

When I shut down, then start back up again....settings gone.

What is a bit odd, though (other than the above) is when I unplug the power and start up, the Gigabyte bios splash screen doesn't have the options below it (F12 etc etc). Just the Gigabyte logo.

When I just start after shutting down, I get the two beeps, and both the screen with the options, then the Gigabyte logo on its own.

So....does this necessarily mean it's a problem with PSU? The fact I've had the issue with two different PSU's would tend to dispute that, but it's possible I suppose?

There are a few suggestions for gb:

https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=gigabyte+cold+boot+reset+overclock

simplest in the first thread is disable legacy usb storage support.

resetting indicates instability, maybe some initial voltages need to be higher.

video card is the common factor. Does not mean it cannot be overcome but may be unstable.

You may want to test stability other than Prime95, try Linx or IBT, then also run Cinebench.

Thanks labs.
Thinking about it, though, my main concern, before I can even think about o/c'ing my g3258, is why my system seems to boot twice, as in 2 beeps, splash screen showing twice, even on default bios settings, and with a brand new mobo?
I'm assuming it shouldn't be doing that.

First boot with o/c settings. Second after the first fails for whatever reason. Makes me feel that your original mobo was probably ok :/ Would lead one to think one of the not changed components has issues.

I'm beginning to think that too.

In fact, I think it may be the G3258 itself.

I've just run a quick Prime95 test with the built in "Performance Upgrade" feature in the bios set on 20%, which put it to 4.3GHZ.

Prime95 was running ok, with the tests passing. But I had Hardware Monitor running at the same time, and the temps went straight to 100 degrees almost immediately.

Which just can't be healthy.

Edit: nm - CPU fan got stuck. False alarm.

May very well still be the CPU though.

The only components I have from the "old" build is the CPU, the SSD's, and the USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard and printer).

The PSU, RAM, mobo and dvd writer are replacements.

Ok, tested with IBT, 4.3GHZ, 1.25v,:

So both Prime95 and IBT say it's absolutely stable.

I just don't know what's going on...in a nutshell, the o/c itself works a treat, I just can't get the bios to keep it!

I have zero experience with oc. I'm thinking it may not be stable on startup. Can you start it without the card and see if the same occurs? Without a monitor will need some creativity to understand it.

Easy way if the mobo has hdmi on board and you can try a TV instead of your video card. Manual says hdmi out.

Thanks GZT - I'll try that.

Another little twist this morning. I had the power off to the PC overnight, started it up and it had retained the o/c settings. No surprises.

I shut down, didn't disconnect the power, started it back up, and.....o/c settings retained!

So it's that lovely word....intermittent. Sigh.

It was looking promising - a couple of shut downs/start ups and they stayed.

And then, after leaving it off for about 45 minutes and starting up again....2 beeps, double splash screen, settings gone. FFS.
