Hi everyone,

Just now I excitedly took delivery of my first ever external SSD drive, an ADATA SD700. I chose this one because I have an old computer with only 2 USB 3 ports on the back. The rest of my USB ports are version 2 I believe. This model is meant to work with both types of ports.

I plugged it in, windows recognized it as being there but immediately said there was a problem and I should scan the drive. Doing that resulted in windows saying everything is fine. But it is not.

I transferred a folder of photos to it and it was stupidly slow, only doing around 27MB/s. It was slower than when I transfer photos to my very old external My Book HDD.

I have tried to find drivers on the Adata website but can't access anything, it says there is a server error.

I have downloaded the Adata SSD Toolbox and my brand new SSD doesn't show up on it. As far as it is concerned the only hard drive I have is my internal WD one.

When I go into the device manager I see it being there, when I try to update the drivers for it it says I have the latest ones windows recommend but they are ancient. And it won't download any more.

At one point when I was trying to fix it I saw a wee note somewhere that said 'this drive will work faster if plugged into a USB 3 port'...... but it is plugged into a USB 3 port. I've tried it in all the USB ports I have on the computer and it's always the same.

I"m not sure what to do? Do I need to format the new SSD drive ?? And if so.... how do I do that?

Will it work properly if I can just find the right driver?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

You won't find a driver. They're Universal Plug N Play storage. Just like a USB stick, the interface does the work not the actual storage/drive

it may be pre-formatted. (expect it to be) It may not. Explorer - right click the drive, format

Are the USB sockets blue, and or have a lightning bolt or 'SS' beside them

~30M/s is only about USB2 speeds.

Yes the USB are blue. They are not the lightning bolt ones, computer is too old.

Don't mean thunderbolt, or USB-C, or lightning bolt (apple) ports.

But high speed charge. It's associated with true USB3

https://www.techdim.com/usb-symbols/

If anything, your device probably needs different chipset/USB controller drivers. Or enabling in the BIOS to turn them on with backward compatibility.

The two blue usb ports I have just have usb stamped on the metal of the computer case. There is no symbol. The blue ports have 5 tiny gold pins for connectors.

""your device probably needs different chipset/USB controller drivers"" How do I do that? Or do the BIOS thing?

Thanks

Yes it is there. The new SSD drive is working, it's just a lot slower than I expected it to be. But I now know that might be because of the internal HHD I am transferring photos from is a slow one.

Reading, is faster than writing. You should easily exceed those speeds if it were true USB3

Likewise, it wouldn't suggest you use a faster port if it was running at USB3

Using 'update' in device manager. Is not the way to get drivers. That is the best way to say, has MS replaced my current generic MS ones with this Device ID or not.

It's a laptop. It'll be brandname?. Goto the website support page for the model. Look for USB3 or chipset drivers

If it is older, they may well be an offloaded chipset such as my aging PC - NEC. Rather than integrated intel based. And have their own package that needs to be forced on to use USB3.

What sort of speeds are you getting in CrystalDiskMark?

My computer is a mid tower. Hopefully I can attach the details of it from Speccy here for you. The new drive runs as it should on another tower computer I have, so I know the problem is with these USB ports on my main computer. Do I look for USB3 chipset drivers via the motherboard of my machine? Thanks

You will need to troll the device manager USB host interface area, or other utility, and see if it mentions the intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller. Or just a USB controller

They are only there for W7, which means W10 should take care of it. So you likely need to look in the bios during startup, It may not be enabled by default and in USB2 mode.

As you'll see in the manual. There are a number of USB3 options. Including enable/disable. And host interface - but don't ask me what they refer to. I've been out of the early tech game for a bit.
