Yeah I saw that - great to see they are being very pro-active on firmware based on community feedback.

Hi NZtechfreak or Fraktul,

How have you found this phone durability wise? Is it prone to screen and body microscratches as some (seems to be a minority so far) have suggested on the net?

TIA!

No problems here, especially on the capacitive hardened glass screen.

This phone is sounding better and better, especially when compared to the N97. And this is coming from a N95 8 gig owner.

How would you rate the camera?

The camera is stellar providing there is enough light (the same caveat goes for the N95, although the i8910 is better in low light than the N95 and similar phones in the N-Series range - I am not including the N86 in these comments, bring brand new and distinctly different than the rest of its N-Series brethren).

Camera start-up takes around a second, and the time from shot-to-shot is also exceptionally fast. A considerable advance on the N-Series phones.

It is very feature rich, unlike the N-Series phones with Face/Blink/Smile detection, wide dynamic range (very good feature in a camera, google it if you need explanation of why), panoramic mode, and a few other gimmicky fun things like mosaic and frames modes. Otherwise it packs all the features present on the N-Series phones.

Video is 720p, but unfortunately the sound is encoded in AMR codec at 8kbps - this is being fixed in an upcoming firmware though (at which point there will be nothing to detract from the camera). It also does 120fps slow mo too.

Basically its camera, all things considered, is amongst the top cameras to be found on a mobile. I'd rate it equal with the N86, on account of the software advantage (face/blink/smile/wdr etc), and better than all others except in low light - the N82 still can't be beat in those conditions.

Low light is always going to be a problem with such a small lense and sensor. What would have really made it prefect was if they had included a xenon flash as well as the LED flash - then you could have video with LED lighting and the Xenon for photo shooting.

Indeed, Xenon would have made this phone an absolute monster camera-phone. Only thing I miss about my N82 (still all-around one of the best cellphone cameras out there)

NZtechfreak, how would you rate the sound quality of the phone, both calls and music wise? And does the GPS lock on as quickly as various reviewers suggest? My two big beefs with my otherwise perfect N95 8 GB is that (1) it's ugly and (2) the GPS lockon is just painfully slow.

If the GPS works well on the Omnia, I think a purchase will be inevitable :)

GPS lock time is unparalleled (I've owned N95, N95 8GB, N82, HTC Touch Pro, Sony Xperia for comparisons on GPS quality), of course thats using AGPS. Less than 5s from a cold start for me... Without AGPS it'll be a little slower, but still faster than the Nokia's without AGPS due to the GPS+ application - you can download a weeks worth of GPS satellite data at a time (over your home WiFi etc).

Music wise the quality is fantastic, although the 5.1 sound via headsets is worse for me than just using a preset equaliser.

In-call quality is fine for me, no worries there at all (been a while since I've used a Nokia, but I don't think its quite as good as them).

Hi NZtechfreak,
Would you know if there is any details regarding the FM transmitter that is built into the Omnia HD and if there is anything out there to enable it? From what I've researched so far is that models from HK have the component stripped due to some kind of piracy law.
With the fix to the 720p audio codec issue I'm very close to making a purchase, however I'm trying to determine if its worth purchasing from places that import from asian with the FM transmitter disabled for future use.

There is no FM transmitter, it was removed I'm afraid.

Hey NZtechfreak,

Would you be able to describe your typical usage patterns and the extent to which the battery lasts on your phone. I just want to get some idea of the battery life on this thing as my N95 8GB is starting to frustrate in that regard.

Thanks!

Varies quite a bit, on my typical work day I'll have true push email on all day, with a few widgets periodically updating, 10-20 minutes of calls, 20-50 text messages, up to an hour or so using the music player, then usually something like an hour of various tomfoolery on various programs including GPS and the browser. The battery is still improving from what I've observed, but even from the outset its been very good. That said I still need to charge every day, but then since I've yet to own a phone that could really do better, and a few like my N95 and N95 8GB that were much worse, I won't hold that against it.

According to reports on the net the new firmware due this week, or maybe next week, will improve battery performance (in addition to adding more software, improving speed - although its extremely fast right now anyways, and also add aac audio encoding to video recording).
