Tbh I couldn't care if the other OEMs build WPs or not.

In retrospective the quality of hardware coming out of microsoft (and predecessor nokia) is so good, there is no alternative.
Yet to see an iphone or android as strong as a Nokia 920.

Would rather microsoft conduct a similar move like they did with the surface pro.

The premium phones are made by microsoft.
OEMs can make the cheaper / alternative stuff - if they want to.

I think this system works out better than Apple (locked in and must pay too much) vs Android with each vendor running a race to the bottom - in cost and quality.

My old Huawei X5 got next to no support or upgrades from the vendor less than a year after release. Updates for my old HTC 8X WP come out far far slower than MS/Nokia phones... still not sure whether it will even get WP10.

Decent first party medium term software update support is why I rock Google Nexus 5 atm. Apple's software upgrade support for their devices is good too but I find the the ecosystem too restrictive.

I'd take a good look at a MS WP10 device but not a Asus, Samsung, HTC, whatever one...

Since the health and fitness app is going, what does this mean for Microsoft Band? Doesn't it rely on it? I thought I had seen rumours of a second version being in the works. Am going to the US next month and was thinking of getting one but not if it's about to be discontinued.

Band is not being discontinued. We have already announced there is a v2 in development.

Band uses and app called Microsoft Health

Band v1 just got a 25% price off in US/UK

Thanks for the that info, I didn't realise that was a different app to the MSN health and fitness one that's being discontinued. So with v2 in development would it still be worth getting v1 or better to hold off? Are either likely to come to NZ? Will have a look at it if I get a chance in the US next month anyway.

i can't comment on NZ availability or V2 timeframes.  V1 was very much a test the waters scenario.  Our other hardware is available here already...

I am quite keen on the MS Band, in my particular circumstance it is very important to move and exercise in a very measured way. I like the visual aspect of the info on the band and it sync with Windows and other products

"Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella today restated the company's commitment to deliver new flagship phones, and acknowledged that it's an area in which it needs to do better. But he also indicated that the some key decisions need to be made in order to make its cluttered value phone range "more efficient"."

Hammerer: I'm not sure that you read the article given that the thread title doesn't relate to the content which is about the failure of Microsoft's Nokia phone hardware. Nokia phone hardware is not the same as Windows Phone software, which is what you appear to assume. The article makes this distinction when it points out that Microsoft only sold 1/4 of the phones using Windows Phone as the operating system.

EDIT: This is a much better article explaining it all in a lot more detail with graphs.

I'm not sure that article is any better.  It reads like a Windows Phone fan boy article to me.

So Microsoft don't want to dominate the Windows Phone hardware market. So who's going to step in and fill that vacuum?  The likely candidates have left the room.

Also just remind me again what the overall Windows Phone market share is?  From memory it's less then 3% and shrinking.

This is a probably a better balanced article http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/8/8913365/microsoft-lumia-windows-phones-strategy-2015

I'd say this is the beginning of the end for Windows Phone.

On a brighter note for all those who want to stay away from the fruit there's every chance there'll Nokia phones back on the market within the near future, perhaps as soon as next year.

Last I heard, Microsoft was creating an ARM compatible version of Windows 10 for some phone company. So that might be their strategy rather than rely on nokia. Which would be smart because then all the android manufacturers could have windows phones too. Certainly windows 8.1 runs alright on an ARM tablet, so why not?

And I think Windows 10 might be pretty huge, so it's possible it will grow out from the hybrid/desktop market.

Blackberry has less than this and it's still afloat (turned around from pre-classic/passport).

Although from a quick google it appears Windows is up in some markets. Apple on the other hand is down generally speaking.

 Probably Microsoft laughing

I agree Microsoft won't be relying on Nokia. Don't forget Microsoft bought the Nokia handset division but have dropped using the Nokia name.

Once the restraint of trade period with Microsoft concludes I wouldn't be surprised to see Nokia marketing phones under their own name again. However if/when that happens I don't think Nokia will be offering Windows based phones.

Dreal:  Which would be smart because then all the android manufacturers could have windows phones too.

It would be very smart, in fact I think they have already done something like this with HTC.

Are you sure windows 8.1 runs on ARM chips? So far as I'm aware 8.1 needs to run on Intel chips.  Could it be you're thinking of Windows RT?

Dreal:  Although from a quick google it appears Windows is up in some markets. Apple on the other hand is down generally speaking.

Yep, WP is up in some markets but overall their total market share is barely 3%.

Nah, it wasn't for themselves. They were trying to create a 'port' of windows 10 that ran on this one specific manufacturers phones. But I am thinking its a sort of testing pad for creating a generic ARM port of Windows 10.

you might be thinking of WP/WM10 and Xiaomi

there is no such thing as a generic ARM port of Windows 10.  In fact there is even no such thing as "generic ARM"

Okay, so windows 10 mobile does run on ARM. I realize that each manufacturer needs firmware. But this means that windows phone 10 does not need windows specific devices for phones I assume, yes?

Which is what I was thinking might be the case.

No, you need drivers

You cant run iOS on Android hardware or Android on iOS hardware even though both are "ARM"

I thought you could run Android on an iPhone. Android L anyway.

But I guess the question is, will this enable Microsoft to put Windows 10 on more phones? Not that you will nessasarily be able to answer that.
