nathan: i can't comment on NZ availability or V2 timeframes. V1 was very much a test the waters scenario. Our other hardware is available here already...
Technofreak:Hammerer: I'm not sure that you read the article given that the thread title doesn't relate to the content which is about the failure of Microsoft's Nokia phone hardware. Nokia phone hardware is not the same as Windows Phone software, which is what you appear to assume. The article makes this distinction when it points out that Microsoft only sold 1/4 of the phones using Windows Phone as the operating system.
EDIT: This is a much better article explaining it all in a lot more detail with graphs.
I'm not sure that article is any better. It reads like a Windows Phone fan boy article to me.
So Microsoft don't want to dominate the Windows Phone hardware market. So who's going to step in and fill that vacuum? The likely candidates have left the room.
Also just remind me again what the overall Windows Phone market share is? From memory it's less then 3% and shrinking.
This is a probably a better balanced article http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/8/8913365/microsoft-lumia-windows-phones-strategy-2015
I'd say this is the beginning of the end for Windows Phone.
On a brighter note for all those who want to stay away from the fruit there's every chance there'll Nokia phones back on the market within the near future, perhaps as soon as next year.
Dreal: Last I heard, Microsoft was creating an ARM compatible version of Windows 10 for some phone company.Probably Microsoft
Dreal: So that might be their strategy rather than rely on nokia.
Dreal: Which would be smart because then all the android manufacturers could have windows phones too.
Dreal: Certainly windows 8.1 runs alright on an ARM tablet, so why not?
Dreal: Although from a quick google it appears Windows is up in some markets. Apple on the other hand is down generally speaking.
Sony Xperia XA2 running Sailfish OS. https://sailfishos.org The true independent open source mobile OS
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6
Dell Inspiron 14z i5

I agree Microsoft won't be relying on Nokia. Don't forget Microsoft bought the Nokia handset division but have dropped using the Nokia name.
Once the restraint of trade period with Microsoft concludes I wouldn't be surprised to see Nokia marketing phones under their own name again. However if/when that happens I don't think Nokia will be offering Windows based phones.Dreal: Which would be smart because then all the android manufacturers could have windows phones too.
It would be very smart, in fact I think they have already done something like this with HTC.Dreal: Certainly windows 8.1 runs alright on an ARM tablet, so why not?
Are you sure windows 8.1 runs on ARM chips? So far as I'm aware 8.1 needs to run on Intel chips. Could it be you're thinking of Windows RT?Dreal: Although from a quick google it appears Windows is up in some markets. Apple on the other hand is down generally speaking.
Yep, WP is up in some markets but overall their total market share is barely 3%.
nathan: you might be thinking of WP/WM10 and Xiaomi
there is no such thing as a generic ARM port of Windows 10. In fact there is even no such thing as "generic ARM"
Windows Mobile 10 runs on ARM, so does Windows IoT Core

Okay, so windows 10 mobile does run on ARM. I realize that each manufacturer needs firmware. But this means that windows phone 10 does not need windows specific devices for phones I assume, yes?
Which is what I was thinking might be the case.

No, you need drivers
You cant run iOS on Android hardware or Android on iOS hardware even though both are "ARM"
