What *is* the "default" sound?

So yer go into Settings, and well, first thing you notice is, it's quite a mess in here. Anyone disagree?

But then you go into 'ringtones + sounds' (mix some maths with some English - and it's on many other items. Could we not just have 'and' ???))

And in there, 'manage app sounds'.

(which is the same as going, settings, 'notifications + actions' (or on my 1520, I can't see the "s" on actions - phone must be too small). Ah, so that's why they use a "+".)

And in 'manage app sounds' ('notifications + actions'), there's all the things that you can have sounds for. So picking one, anything; and then the "Notification sound" for that - there's one, second to the top of the list, called 'default'.

What sound is that? And where do I find it? And why can't I "play" it? (then I could maybe find out).

I imagine its the sound you've chosen for notifications in sound settings.

When you set a app specific sound, you're telling it to ignore your "master" settings.

Huh... I could swear there was an option for the notification sound... ignore everything I said.

Go to Settings - Ringtones+sounds
Here you can set your default Ringtone (where it says Ringtone) and other default alert sound (where it says Reminders)
Then scroll down and you get select "Manage App Sounds" (which yes is the same as going to "Notifications + actions")
Here you see all the apps you have installed that make noises and you can go through and set different sounds for each of them if you want to.

Seems simple enough to me?

Perhaps apps can provide their own default notification sound, but here you can override it? And perhaps because the apps are providing said sound it's not easy to "preview" it?
