Hi, I have a Tungsten T3 and I need to create a new connection at 14,400bps. The problem is that the speed options that I have jump from 9,600bps to 19,200bps. I have a PalmIII as well with PalmOS 3.5 and I can set the speed properly.

I have a friend that mentioned that there is a .prc that will "unlock" the other speed settings on palmOS 5.x based handhelds. I haven't been able to find this utility.

Does someone know about something that might help me achieve this?

What kind of connection is this? Via landline modem, GPRS, CDMA or GSM? The speeds you see there are the ones from the Palm to the modem device. For example, if you're using a landline modem, and the other end accepts a connection at maximum 14.4kbps, then the Palm can be configured to 115.2kbps but this will not change anything.

You'll have to use a proper Init String with the commands to set the modem if you want to fix the connection speed.

This is a CDMA 1X connection using a Nokia 6585. Let me expand the situation some more.

The IR port on this handset is very tricky. I'm able to establish a connection at every baud rate available on the T3 through using the IR. The string that I'm using is +CRM=1;+CSO=33. You can browse, ftp, email, etc. with this connection, however, there is a lot of packet retransmisions, duplications, etc., but it still works.

The problem is with Network Hotsync, which seems to be more sensitive to these situations. Thinking that this was a port speed issue and remembering that early IR ports would only work on 14.4kbps, I decided to try that speed on the T3, but the problem is that it is not listed! I have an old Palm IIIe with PalmOS 3.5 and the speed is listed. I tried it and viola! It worked! I also tried a higher speed on the Palm III to make sure that it wasn't a version problem and I got the same unsuccessful result that I got on the T3, even at 19,200.

So, what I want to do is to set the port speed on the T3 to 14.4kbps and test it to see if its stable. Since its not listed, I want to know if there is a way to set this on the T3 (or any other PalmOS 5x PDA). Nokia doesn't have a string that can control the IR port speed (or at least its not published yet).

Fair enough. Sounds ok. But I'd check if there's a firmware update for the Nokia - I remember seeing something about this here. It sounds that using 14.4kbps on a CDMA 1x connection is a lot of speed being wasted. You should be able to get up to 60kbps (sometimes a little more) from the CDMA 1x connection. Have you checked with another phone?

Yes, 14.4kbps is VERY slow. We get pretty good throughput over our 1X network. I got in touch with Nokia and they are looking into this.

In another interesting turn of events, I tried to do an ActiveSync with an iPaq at 115.2kbps and it worked nicely, so it seems that this is a Nokia-Palm issue.

Anyway, I still need to do the 14.4kbps test on the T3 just to verify that its a port speed issue and not something with the application itself.

Is there *any* way I can set my T3 IR port to 14.4kbps???
