I am very frustrated trying to get an Internet connection working over bluetooth for this device. Here are a few questions:

(1) Can anyone confirm or deny that the PAN User Driver works on this device, against Windows XP running the WIDCOMM/Broadcom latest Bluetooth stack?

(2) I found that after long periods of either the PC or the device sitting idle, I have to restart the bluetooth services on both. As in, I have to disable and then re-enable the bluetooth radios/connections. Anyone else?

(3) After setting up a network connection in Bluetooth Manager, the phone pops up a windows saying "Connection to: BT Network Access Using: Bluetooth Null Modem" However, I am trying to use a PAN connection, not a LAP connection! Is this normal on the VX6600? I assume this means that even if I do get things working I will be limited to 115kbps ?

(4) The Dialing settings have a phone number "Connect" entered, by default. The connection never seems to complete. Any clues?

Are you trying to use the CDMA EV-DO connection of your Verizon VX6600 from your laptop?

If this is the case, then you have to use it as a dial-up device (DUN), not LAP or PAN. Follow the instructions on this guide. Instead of *99# use the following:

  • Dial number is #777.
  • For Verizon Wireless username is phonenumber@vzw3g.com, password vzw.
  • For Telecom New Zealand username is mobile@jamamobile, password telecom.

Caveat: check what Bluetooth version you have on your VX6600. BT-PPC/PE Version 1.0.0 Build 2300 seems to have problems and will disconnect every few minutes. Build 3000 and up seems to be the good one, but this is still being tested.

    Answering your other questions:

1.PAN works on this device. However once connected the device does have not any network resources to offer. If you want to share its connection to another device (Pocket PC, laptop, desktop), it will not work because there's no routing capabilities on the network layers (that's why we use ICS when sharing from the laptop to other devices).

2.This is one of the problems related to the Bluetooth software version and it's known (it's also a problem on HP iPAQ h6315 and the GPRS versions like i-mate PDA2k).

3.It's normal, the connection seems like a dial-up - although with my Harrier (same device another mobile operator) the laptop does not ask for authentication.

4.Connect is correct., but as I said in my case I don't have such a request when connecting.

My message was with respect to connecting the VX6600 to a desktop, in order to utilize the desktop's network connection from the VX6600. The problem I see with using the "Bluetooth Null Modem" method is that this is limited to 115200 baud; at least, if I am to believe the configuration screens. Bluetooth should be capable of closer to 700kbps, no?!

In any case, I cannot seem to get any kind of connection started -- the VX6600 either hangs during the connection attempt, or is unable to even begin the connection negotiation. When this happens, disabling & re-enabling bluetooth on either the laptop of VX6600 causes the next attempt to at least succeed partially. I've used the SpyLite++ app included with my USB Bluetooth device on my desktop (WIDCOMM software, basically) to confirm that bluetooth packets are being exchanged ebtween the VX6600 and the desktop, but to no apparent avail.

Another strange item is that vxWorks reports on the VX6600 both a "Bluetooth Null Modem" and a "WIDCOMM Null Modem" connection ... go figure.

Anyway, as I understood PAN, all this Null Modem stuff should not be involved... no?

Using PAN or LAP is determined by the configuration on the server side. If you're using a Widcomm based Bluetooth software on your desktop, right-click the Bluetooth icon on the System Tray, click Advanced Configuration and change to the Local Services tab. Find the Network Access item and change its configuration.

When set to "Allow other devices to access the Internet/LAN via this computer" it's using LAP. When set to "Allow other devices to create a private network with this computer" it's using PAN.

Using LAP requires a PPP server, which is provided by Bluetooth, plus a mini DHCP and routing server provided by ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Our guides are based on this. In this case you create a Sharing between the connection (LAN -> Bluetooth)

Using PAN requires either manual configuration on your Pocket PC or a DHCP server on your network. In this case you're also required to Bridge the connections (Bluetooth >-< LAN) on your desktop.

Your Pocket PC it will use the appropriate connection type depending on what service it's trying to connect. Bluetooth is capable of 720Kbps, but some Pocket PC implement the communication through a serial UART, which limits the speed to 115Kpbs. Also, 720Kbps is the one direction max speed. Most likely you'll have something around 1/2 of this when working.

The reasons why your PAN/LAP wouldn't work involve a misconfigured firewall on your computer. Either Zone Alarm, Norton or even the Windows XP SP2 firewall may and will block Bluetooth communications if misconfigured.

Also, if your Bluetooth is set to LAP you must use ICS or other routing software. ICS requires a specific address on your Bluetooth adapter on the desktop, 192.168.0.1. If this address is already in use then it will have conflicts.

Go back to your Bluetooth configuration, try following this guide for Bluetooth Internet Sharing to Windows Mobile to the letter and see how it goes.

    1) My Harrier appears to be using PAN even though my PC Widcomm Driver-Advanced Config-> Local Services-> Network is set to "Allow other devices to access the LAN/Internet via this computer. I have a program on my Harrier called "My IpConfig" which reports the BTCEPAN1 Adapter is in use. (Description = Bluetooth PAN user Driver).

    2) I find this too. Although it was nice to know I only need to turn both radios on and off to get it working again.. I have resorted to removing batteries and restarting PC in the past. Anyone know if a new version (ie later than Bt-PPc/Pe Version 1.0.0 Build 2300 has come out yet to fix this bug?

    3) After trying lots of things including bluetooth nullmodem settings, I managed to get my harrier to share my pc's internet connection following the process given here. http://www.pc-counselor.com/How_to/bluetooth_network.htm. I have a separate dsl router with a dhcp server in it, so I followed this option with a bridged connection as suggested above by Frietasm. "My IpConfig" was good for checking and renewing IP address on my PPC
