I have a h5450, and want to connect it to the internet without too much expense so i'm planning on just getting a wireless PCI card, putting it in the home pc and then sharing the dsl connection that way, somehow.

What i wanna know at the moment is is this possible and easy to do? Of course if it is i'll be asking more soon :p

Should be ok to do it - remember to bridge the new card to the adapter that connects your computer to the Internet or LAN, and remember to use AdHoc mode on the card configuration.

Ah... Just to make it clear "Bridge" the connections is a feature only available on Windows XP.

ok card bought... now any chance of some help as I really don't know the first thing to do... stuff like bridging the card to my router and all that? and the adhoc mode and all that

edit: actually do you know where i can get a step by step guide for this, i really have no idea what im doing here.

Bridging the connections is simple: after installing the card drivers and inserting the cad, right-click the network icon on your desktop and select Properties (or open it from Control Panel).

Select both the network adapters (the one connecting to the LAN/Internet and the new one) and right-click. Select Bridge. This will bridge the connections.

Make sure the Wireless card is set to Ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure.

On your iPaq enable the Wireless adapter. Your Pocket PC will find the new network and ask if you want to connect. If you have a DHCP server on your network then it will automatically get an address and DNS information. If you do not have then you will have to manually enter an address and DNS server address on your Pocket PC, by using Start | Settings | Connections tab and then going to Network Cards and changingthe settings there.

Before doing any changes on your computer, make sure you create a restore point (if using Windows XP). This will allow you to rollback any changes if things go wrong.

thanks for all that.. i'm almost there but have the pc on a static ip so need to set ipaq with one too, i just dont know whwere to, i know you said settings, connection, network cards but i dont see any options anywhere to mess with IP settings?

Tap Stat | Settings | Connections tab. Tap the Connections icon and then the Advanced tab. The last button should be [Network Card].

You can then change the configuration on Network Adapters.

hi sorry but which network adaptor do i change, there is 7 in the list, ne2000 compatible ethernet, ipaq usb wireless, l2tp ndiswan miniport, etc... ?

im guessing it was usb wireless adaptor btw as that was the only one set an IP, if my PC has a static IP address of 192.168.1.5, I have set the settings on iPAQ to 192.168.1.9 and the gateway, dns and wins as the router IP address.. this sound right?

oh and bridged the 2 connections (do i need to set a static IP on the wireless card settings?) Is there anything else i need to do?

You could use the DNS from your ISP instead.

sod's law has decided that i don't have enough battery to turn wireless on at the moment so giving it a charge, so will continue to try soon but for now do i you think everything is covered? oh and that was the right adaptor and settings i was changing?

well now it waits for a bit before telling me it cant find an internet site... not sure if you can call that progress :p

So, so far this is what is done -

On iPAQ, turned on wlan, in settings>connections>connectionss>advanced>network card - added new settings, in network adaptors tab i have changed the IP setting to static for iPAQ USB Wireless Adapter

On PC, bridged LAN connection 1 (one that connects to internet) with wireless networking. In wireless card manager have set card to ad-hoc.

still no worky.. is there no step by step guides anywhere that you know of?

Not really, you have to use Google to find a guide.

I recommend you install VxUtil and use it to PING a host, such as www.wired.com for example. See if it works.

If it works, then the problem is on the Pocket Internet Explorer. There are a couple of configuration files with strange names and sometimes you delete these by mistake. To recreate these files:

On your Pocket PC open File Explorer

Browse to \Windows

Tap welcome.exe and follow instructions

After it finishes, soft reset the Pocket PC

Try using Pocket Internet Explorer again

arrgh, im so confused.. ive even downgraded the ipaq to PPC 2002 to see if that works.. still nada... and getting nowhere with google searches either

Ooops, that is not good. Windows Mobile 2003 is much better than Pocket PC OS 2002, and it includes a Zero Configuration wireless LAN wizard. It will find a network and ask if you want to use it or not. When selecting the network make sure it it select as "Connect to Internet". And enter the configuration on the iPaq's network card before connecting to the network/ad hoc computer.

Check this guide.

Check this page for the Wireless Connection Manager on Windows Mobile 2003, and this page for all things related to Wi-Fi and Pocket PC.
