Unable to establish wireless link between ipaq and Outlook so I may access my emails. I have got wireless icon showing and connection with Linksys modem made but real time downloading of emails and access to internet not possible. I am sure i am missing out on doing something really simple. can you help?

I understand you are trying to remotely synchronise to an Outlook installed on your desktop?

What version of ActiveSync are you using? ActiveSync 4.0 and 4.1 do not allow remote synchronisation anymore.

I got the ipaq today and installed 4.0 and then upgraded it to 4.1. Thnaks. Looks like I am unable to access emails wirelessly which was the only reason for buying the ipaq!!!

You can still access emails remotely if you synchronise to an Exchange Server (if your company or provider don't have their servers then you can use third party such as 4smartphone.net).

The remote synchronisation to a desktop was removed, apparently, for security reasons.

i am a home user connecting with my pc which has a linksys wireless modem so am not sure the servier/3rd party software idea is the right one for me
HP are admanant the 2490 ipaq does connect wirelessly with outlook!

Just so there is some sort of "closure" on this issue hp were very helpful and finally advised it was impossible to use wireless to synch with my new PDA; that 4.0 and 4.1 versions of activesynch were unreliable. The pda has therefore been returned. They said stick with activesynch 3.8 and a 2nd edition model.
Wonder if anyone out there might recommed a pda model that reliably does wireless synch with a desktop Outlook and emails. Should I look at the Acer n50 Premium. Does that work?

I have found my HP hx4700 to be very good for all things wireless. That said, it did have some issues with specific CISCO brand wireless routers, but a router firmare patch fixed this.

I disagree with ActiveSync 4.0 and 4.1 being unreliable.

The new version rely on network communications rather than a serial protocol. This kind of communication can be affected by badly configured personal firewalls - it's not that ActiveSync is unreliable, is just that most users will have a software like Zone Alarm set to block all. Microsoft has put an ActiveSync 4.0 USB Connection Troubleshooting Guide out to help people if they have problems.

As for remote synchronisation, it was removed from ActiveSync 4.x as I posted before. The most likely reason is security. As far as I known it looks like Activesync 4.0 uses a lot of the Exchange ActiveSync logic in it, making it more robust when it comes to synchronisation - actually better than the old ActiveSync.

I agree there are some problems - but if you will want new devices you will have to use it.

As for a Pocket PC that reliably does remote sync (wireless sync is just a way of doing remote sync), then any model with Wi-Fi should work - they in essence all use the same OS and solutions. You can select the brand your prefer most in terms of service, easy to find, model configuration, etc...
