boy do i regret buying RDR2... im in chapter 2, been playing all weekend, getting bored to tears, quitting, then saying "I should give it another go".  rinse and repeat.

its a gorgeous game, but boy is it a boring game...

  • whistle for your horse, it stops about 10 feet away from you, you have to turn around and walk to it... wtf...
  • loot a person, wait 10 seconds for the animation, loot a whole bunch of people, there goes 5 minutes.  same with skinning an animal
  • you have to brush your horse, clean your gun, feed your horse.
  • too many places you cannot run, so you have to slowly walk around your camp, just drags it out
  • still no fast travel in chapter 2 (not sure when it unlocks).  and a few times you have to go back to where you just came from which means riding on your horse for 5 minutes or so....
  • first few hours of the game was spent just holding the "a" button basically... as you road your horse.
  • if your horse is too far away from you, because a mission required you to take a wagon somewhere... your horse wont come to you... so you have to run on foot an hopefully find a horse, or just run to your destination... there goes 10 minutes....

yes its pretty, yes the shoot outs can be fun... but thats only about 5% of the time in the game... about 80% of the time in the game is boring mundane stuff that feels like its wasting the players time.

I just finished assassins creed odyssey before this game, that I was shocked at how good that game was.  That game was fast, and fun combat and a lively world.  When your called your horse and you were running, you automatically mounted your horse and kept going, no slow downs.  its a little thing, but it kept the pace of the game.  Loot animations took about 1 second, and didnt have you stop, it did it as you were walking/running.  Sure thats unrealistic, but it doesnt slow down the game. It had fast travel!!! early on. The world was huge, it was annoying sailing your ship to a remote island for the first time, but after discovering the fast travel point, you didnt have to do it time and time again.

I cannot see how anyone could rate this game a 10/10.  theyre ignoring the fact, that the game just isnt fun.  a game main goal, shirely has to be to be fun/entertaining.  sure there are indie games etc that are more focused on being interesting etc, but as a AAA game appealing to the masses, its HAS TO BE FUN!!

I tried to get a refund on xbox one, but sadly I had spent more than 2 hours in the game (cos I was giving it a fair go) so they said "no".

I find it fun.  After all the run and gun, super fast games I've played in recent months, it's nice to be forced to pace myself with RDR2.

Agreed - I found the pace and the "slow burn" atmosphere and "weightiness" of the game pretty engaging and refreshing, but I get why it wouldn't be for everyone - it did take me a while to find my groove...

The ability to return or get trade in value at a later date has seen me start to buy more physical media again after years of buying digital only - I have been burned a few times by games that I really wanted to give back after 3-4 hours (Looking at you Nier Automata!)

That said, there have been some games I persevered with just because I couldn't return them and ended up loving them ( The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn...)

Personally I hate discs, being able to quickly change games, and having a library of games is appealing.  Steam is really good in this sense, their refund policy is brilliant, it lets you take a chance on a game.

I switched from ps4 to xbox one, because of their backwards compatibility and the theory I should be able to keep my older games running for many years to come.  Steam was my main platform, but the windows updates, some games controls not working (mass effect 4 wouldnt work with a ps4 controller for instance), it just became work.  Also with a console the ability to sleep the console and continue the game without loading is awesome.

Usually I wouldnt buy a game so early, or at full price, but RDR1/GTA5 are excellent, it was reviewing very well (user score not so well), I was really expecting to love this game.  Ill keep plugging away at it, since Im stuck with it, hoping it becomes more fun (apparently after chapter 3 it really picks up), but thought I should warn others, and suggest they hold off until its much cheaper, as the first 10 hours at least, arent enjoyable.

Absolutely agree - hence my preference for digital ever since HL2 came out on Steam all those years ago!

That said, as I get older I think I am becoming fussier and I have less time to play, so the ability to return a game to EB after a weekend of giving it a good go has been very much appreciated...

1. There is length to the whistle, hold the button down further for longer whistles. Also depends on your horse bonding level.

2. Agreed looting is lengthy and finicky with having to orient Arthur in the right direction. The game does discourage you sticking around too long though, the law comes pretty quickly after a shootout if you stay to loot every body.

3. Don't worry about brushing your horse often unless it's health core is low. If it rains or you wade through a river it cleans automatically. Also don't feed it until its cores are in the red. Same with guns, don't need to clean them until they're less than 30% condition. Better to save the money to buy the holsters/trinkets that reduce weapon wear.

4. Agreed walking in camp is sluggish

5. Fast travel is unlocked at camp when you upgrade Arthur's tent (have to upgrade Dutch's tent first). You can only fast travel FROM camp and not back to it. For travelling between towns you have to use the Stagecoach/train system.

6. Agreed riding the horse gets old quickly. I've taken to doing missions in an area only if I have to travel once. Otherwise I leave it until i'm next in the area

7. You can whistle to your horse before you get on a wagon or other transport and it'll follow you. Just be careful as it can die if it gets in the line of fire. If its otherwise out of range, save and reload and you'll spawn with it a few metres away.

The game is slow yes, and it certainly doesn't do the best job at explaining how things work. I would definitely recommend finding a list of tips online to get up to speed as it certainly helped me get along in some of the mundane things.

I've found that completing the first treasure map "quest" and the gold that comes with it helped significantly, as being able to use the fast travel option is a lifesaver!

Yep if you find a few gold bars that'll help a lot.  Also selling pocket watches and rings to the fences.  Not a spoiler but a hint - there is a gold bar in a burnt out little village south of Valentine.  Not going to say where.

And depending on your feelings around completing the game fairly, you can find about 30 of them in that village.

Otherwise hunting treasure or doing main mission heists gets you the most cash. Just don't get robbed as it takes a cut out of the money you have on your person (learn't that the hard way by getting robbed and dying).

If you also take the time to head up to the snowy mountains on the west side of Lake Isabella, you'll find a really good horse that'll last you the game.

Well, I am into the game properly now, but to be honest, it's so slow I am struggling to stay awake. I was concerned it would be like this honestly, all the little chores to stay "optimum". I am pretty lost most of the time since the tutorials were bare at best.

Basics like I bring an animal to the butcher at night, it says "wait 7 hours till open" so I click this option, next minute my big elk I roped and cut the throat of, is nowhere to be found, despite taking 15 minutes to get it and haul it back to town.

I don't really understand the camp either. There is a donations area and also a butcher I can donate to. As I come into camp there are 3 red icons, but I am unsure how on earth I am supposed to fix that?

Every little person I stop to help ends up being a black mark against me. I took some woman trapped under a horse 20 minutes, my horse slipped slightly and she accudded me of being a horrible person and walked off.

The controls are HORRIBLE, and aiming and the like is almost impossible.

I think I might be the only person on earth not enjoying it. Hopefully, it improves or at least my understanding of it does.

You're not the only one! I've been playing for over a week and am about 15% through the main story as I can only play around 1 hour per day. That hour is feeling like a bit of a chore. The game looks great and I like it, but its not as amazing as most reviews make out. The controls are tricky, the movement feels a bit clunky and like RDR1, I'm finding riding a horse to be quite boring. Graphics are nice, particularly scenery, but things like hitching the horse is pretty bad animation. Same with stowing animals etc...

Before I had kids I could spend numerous hours on a game like this, but now I'm pressed for time and have little patience if it doesn't click right away.

Right now the game is a 8/10 for me.

Im on about 8% of the story I think, just enjoying running around experiencing the different things on offer to do, getting used to hunting etc and using the bow instead of a gun so the meat/pelts are better quality.

Still accidentally get into shootouts etc by pressing wrong button :D

My advice to anyone having frustrations is complete all the yellow character items on the map until your camp moves to another location, and any of the question mark quests you randomly find (because some of them aren't available after you progress the story a certain length).  That way you'll have completed most of the training tasks and got a bit of cash, and from there you can start free-roaming a bit.

Well I have just blown my 3rd random mission in a row in the last 5 seconds of the mission, because I bumped the person or whatever. I am starting to feel mighty frustrated that the game is so slow and sensitive to every little action.

I found a treasure map, but I can't even find the region it's in so I don't even know where to start!

Does meat decompose over time? So if I hunt (and I can only do 1 animal at a time) I have to drop everything and race to a butcher.

Treasure maps: Not sure how they’re meant to be approached but I just made a mental note of the sketches - then kept an eye out for locations that matched. Have found two that way so far.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The game controls very much like GTAV (clunky imo). Carcasses do decompose but if you've already skinned and butchered it yourself then the meat that goes into your inventory for cooking ingredients etc. doesn't decompose. I wouldn't bother with carcasses as they aren't worth much. They also decompose slower in the cold so hunting up in the snow is viable, albeit quite far away.

Also for hunting, you really need to read the info that pops up when you study an animal from afar (R1) as it will tell you exactly what weapon you need to use to get perfect pelt. Small animals usually bow with small game arrows or the varmint rifle. Medium is bow with regular arrows or high velocity rounds. Large game you need rifles with express rounds to bring down.
