In my view side tasks should be something you can do in 1-5 minutes, maybe 10 in some instances. You shouldn't be able to fail a mission you spent 15 minutes on because after dropping someone off, you bump them with a horse.
This the core of the issue in the game I think.
Was just reminded that SWMBO is going away Fri - Mon this weekend tramping with her mates.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Maybe so. In my opinion I enjoy side missions with some substance. They enhance the story in RDR2's case. Rather than being just busy work like collecting backpacks or taking photos of landmarks in Spider-Man (which I also enjoyed).
I guess my view is, if you know bits of the game don't gel for you, but other bits do, just focus on the bits you enjoy and then you'll come out on the other side having mostly enjoyed the game. Easy. You'll know there were bits you missed that weren't great, but hey all games have SOMETHING we don't like.
I have a question about the poor HDR implementation.
What I've read says it is just SDR repackaged as HDR, but it also says the SDR looks much better. How can it be repackaged SDR but at the same time look worse than SDR?
I have this on Xbox One, so (unlike the PS4 version) can't disable HDR within the game but only at the system level - and I don't want to have to keep turning this on and off.
Is there a way to get the picture looking the same as SDR, but with HDR still enabled? Perhaps just drop the in-game HDR slider all the way down?
No, the HDR is fake, basically. It looks better with HDR turned off, I played the first 10 or so hours with HDR, and when I turned it off I was shocked at how much detail I had been missing. Very disappointing implementation of "HDR" in this game. Turning HDR all the way down with the slider is just going to turn it's overall brightness down, which will result in a not very bright, and still washed out picture.

@gehenna that's annoying. I wish the Xbox version had an in-game option to turn it off. Turning it off system wide I'll forget to turn it back on.
I still don't understand how it looks worse turned on though, I would have expected to see no difference. And the Eurogamer article say:
You've got nothing to lose by turning on HDR in Red Dead Redemption 2 but nothing to gain either
But at the same time, anecdotal reports are overwhelmingly saying it looks better turned off. Just doesn't make sense to me.
I think JC4 may have a similar issue though I've not seen it discussed. I'll be trying tonight.

Is the article concerning 4k playback? If you recall from the other thread about HDMI cables, 4k 60Hz on consoles is chroma subsampled with hdr enabled. RDR2 simply puts SDR into HDR format output, and then the display sub samples it further, whereas if you left it at 8bit SDR you would get what the game is outputting without subsampling. (If the reasoning is incorrect somebody can correct me).
This is also not including the fact that the 4k checkboarding is subpar as well.
gehenna: With it turned on everything looks bright across the board. Even blacks. It looks washed out. With it off you can see blacks and brights properly and adjust brightness accordingly without it looking washed out.
Just set yourself a calendar reminder to turn system hdr back on in a couple weeks. The game looks much better with it turned off.
RDR2 isn't the only game I'll be playing.
Do you have it on PS4 or Xbox One? On my Xbox I noticed the SDR picture looks different depending on whether HDR is already disabled when I load the game, vs jumping out of the game and disabling HDR and then resuming.

Just about the HDR. I think the checker-boarding was only an issue on PS4 pro. You're probably right about the subsampling, but I don't know enough about it to know if it should make a discernible difference.

gehenna: I use PS4
You've got then in-game option that I assume you just set once and it remembers for that game only. They should implement that on Xbox!.
