What a weekend.

Call of Duty 4 - about 1.4gb demo download.

Briefly you follow an objective which is to secure an abraham tank stuck in a bog.

You fight you way down a street, through a building, across a courtyard. take out 4 tanks, climb thru a fence, run through everyone back yard , get to the tank, hold off the RPJ waving MEC, call in an airstrike, take out an AA battery, eventually the Cobra's nerf the last strong hold and you meet back at the tank for a barby.

running a 6.1 Creative sound system - this game rocks!.

easy controls to master, simple plot - kill them. realism level  - very high. getting hit is weak - you can take several hits and really - some invisible medic seems to fix you up. This kinda leaves me a bit worried about MP - but it might just be the demo.

the hit detection - was great but it was sp mode. 2 tap head shots..meh.

the could be a serious team based game offering the realist's a bf2 infantry replacement with sizzle.

Unreal tournament 3

There is something great about simple games that are loads of fun. UT3 is fast, loads of BFG's, loads of eye candy and a couple of modes.

Deathmatch - pure kill.
CTF - with vehicles - the surfboards are a great option. Actually my favorite - team work not essential but well worth it. - I think this is where UT3 will beat ETQW's.

ETQW's the game doesn't advance until to achieve the objective. at least in UT3 the two teams are balanced right from the start and if no one is actually going for the flag - its just becomes a frag fest.

Top game.

Crysis - wow, completely different to COD4 and UT3.

a big download at about 1.7gb's but worth it for the gander.  Graphic's and environment interaction - great

swimming - up to the surface and then dolphin diving. cutting trees in half with mounted 50 cals.

The game again follows a senario - your part of a team of spec ops - parachuting onto an island that been secured by Thai trroops. Some wierd arse alien is also loose on the island and your there to find out whats going on.

The game centres around the fact that you wear this super suit. it hold a charge which can be used to give you one of about 6 skills, super speed, armor, strenght, invisbility etc.

basically it means your bloody hard to kill - and you can think up any number of crazy was to kill the bad guys. One of my friends favortes is throwing sea turtles whiles being invisible.

Im not sure how this game is going to work in a multiplay sense but certainly in sp mode its reminiscent of Sam Fisher - Splinter Cell

I think you will find the island is secured by the evil Communist Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (otherwise known at North Korea). Not the slightly less evil Millitary Juntra of the Kingdom of Thailand.

This is a very important point for our protagonist, who has landed on the island in search of a Thai Green Curry after several largers, only be be dissapointed by the local North Korean food which is primarly UN aid rice. Then an alien force decends upon the island in search of its missing larger and all hell breaks loose.

After building my new system ( http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=50&TopicId=16717 ) i have to say, crysis performance is not hot!! Unreal and Cod play beautifully as does quake wars, but that crysis, what a system killer.. playing at a mere 1280x1024 with 8x Antialiasing and antristropic filtering turnd on, running around the island is all good, get into a serious battle and hello here comes the picture slideshow, lol.. Hope the final build is more system friendly! if i was pushing 1600x??? res i would understand but come on its 1280x1024!

I have an overclocked 8800gtx and A64 @ 2.8ghz with a gig of DDR2 running in pretty tight timings and I get okish frame rates in 1900x1200 with 4x AA, 8x anisotropic and everything on high. As soon as a gun fight starts however and we are down to sub 10 fps.

I would suggest this would indicate that reducing shadow quality should have a big impact. There are Nvida Cyrsis optimised drivers our by the way - I would suggest getting them if you dont have them already.

The thing about Crysis is primarily demo of how pretty the new CryENGINE2 is and a game second. I've got a couple of friends with system's similar to yours (Scores of about 11k and 12.5k in 3dMark 06) and they're experiencing some trouble with running the Crysis demo at Very High.

My very-techy friend tells me that the demo doesn't use multi-threading or take much advantage of DX10, so there should be some improvement in the final version due to those features being implemented.

Likewise, UT3 is a game designed to showcase the Unreal3 engine, but is much more mature than CryENGINE2 with several games already released that use it (Bioshock, Rainbox Six: Vegas, Gears of War, etc.) with many more in production.

On the original topic, my favourite of the three would have to be UT3. While this is partly by default as I've never played the CoD games much and my computer isn't strong enough to run Crysis in all its glory, I'm also quite a big fan of the UT games and consider them to quite easily be the most exciting Death Match FPS games. UT3 is pretty much an updated version and more of the same from UT2k4, but the way I see it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Uh its gone gold so no more changes till shipping :)

Yes it uses multithreading however it would seem that it only generates two threads of any decent load meaning that quad core is showing SFA in the benefit side.

As to DX 10 it would see that you can actuall turn most fo the features on that are locked in Very High graphics setting mode and that they are actually dx9 all along and there is no reason for them to have locked this off for DX10 only OS/Hardware combos (I have a DX10 card and DX9 OS).. See http://www.actiontrip.com/link.phtml?http://www.crysis-online.com/forum/index.php?topic=11837.0#msg203789

Just finished playing COD4 campaign.

Awesome game, although the campaign is way too short.

Hello Crysis is a great game demo.  It is very scalable in performance even on my machine its very playable with the eye candy turned down on XP.

A lot of people upgraded or brought new machines to early in the hope of kicking ar** in crysis and are now disappointed.

Crysis - Confirmed Runs Best on Quad Core and 64 Bit OS thats been confimed.

There is even tweaks for the game to turn up all the dx9 features and on some high end machines the differance between XP dx9 and Vista dx10 is hardly noticable.

My PC is only

2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 ( with HT Technology)
3.00 GB of Ram
GF 7600GT 560M 256MB DDR3 DUAL DVI TV

Recomend you download the demo and there are download sites in NZ.

Plus the demo contains all the weapons and the Aliens and has the full sandbox editor which there are now a few maps that have all the weapons like tanks and guns that fire nukes!

heh. I've heard pretty much the same.

mp mode will be interesting tho. the slightly higher machines should gain some advantage - not that it worries me. UT3 and CoD4 run sweet on my rig.
