My four-year-old PS4 was running normally on Monday. On Tuesday it simply would not start. I tried everything then googled and tried more stuff - with no success. Could not get it to start in safe mode. Tried de-powering and booting without the hard drive (per Sony website advice) etc - all no go.

So I took it to an apparently respectable computer repair place on the North Shore - who advertise as PS4 repair specialists. On Wednesday they emailed saying the motherboard was stuffed and to repair it would cost $400 incl gst.

I didn’t want to spend that much on a repair given the price of brand-new units so I went out and bought a new one that day. I then went and picked up the old one.

Thinking I would try and sell the old one for parts on Trademe, I decided to give it one last check this morning before listing it on Trademe. It started perfectly (after safe mode) and is running fine.

Now I have a problem. I have forked out for an inspection fee at the repair place and for a new one - so now I have two functioning PS4’s. I don’t know if the repair people were trying to rip me off. Maybe they couldn’t get it going - but how come it is now running? Intermittent fault?

I’m not sure I could return the new one under these circumstances (I have already set it up and started using it).

I could sell the old one on TM - then I’m out of pocket for the inspection fee and the difference between the cost of the new one and what I get for the old one.

Or I could sell the new one - then I’m still out of pocket.

I think the repair place has a bit to answer for here. Maybe I should have waited to get the old one back before buying the new one - but I relied on their advice which lined up with my problem experience with it.

Advice appreciated.

It's entirely possible you have an intermittent fault. The inspection company have no motivation to lie to you as they would know it's unlikely a repair is going to proceed at 95% the cost of a new unit.

There is a chance your old unit could fault again tomorrow and stay dead or be unreliable.

Personally, in that situation I'd sell the old one on TM and move on.

Could be that if the repairer took the unit apart, they inadvertently fixed it by tightening something up that was loose before causing it to now work.

But as networkn said, could fault again at any time.

Throw it on TM and be honest with it.

No-one likes to feel like they were treated unfairly, esp if at the end of it, you end up out of pocket. Having said that, sometimes these situations arise and you just end up taking it on the chin.

I have a strong adverse reaction to faulty things, so I upgrade often to avoid it, and rarely repair items because I find it causes me great frustration.

Having said that, I think you made the right choice in this situation :)

Thanks @networkn and @xpd - good advice there and I think you're both correct.

If there is an upside in this, it's that I upgraded to a PS4 Pro - which plays RDR2 pretty nicely on an OLED TV now that Rock Star have completely fixed the original HDR problems with the game. Silver cloud lining etc so I'm not too twisted about it. 😀

The PS4 Pro is an excellent peice of kit and a worthy spend of your consumer dollars!

Funny story. This year I tried to fix someones console. Pulled it apart, found not apparent fault. Put it together after cleaning it out, and it worked fine. There must be a million reasons why doing that would fix the problem, and some of them might happen again. But hey, it happens.

As a side note though, I doubt many expert repairers would actually take the time to open up a schematic for the board and run some electrical diagnostics. It is just easier to say an entire part is faulty and get it replaced. Such a big e-waste.
