Hi

I have just taken possession of what i think is an 80's arcade machine. It has a new chip with 33 games, but after going through the sync process i cannot select the game I want. I suspect the joystick is faulty. There is also no sound. Does anyone know of a repairer in Dunedin that would tackle this
?

Cheers

I once repaired an arcade type machine, never touched one before.

On disassembling the cabinet I found a regular PC inside and the joystick plugged into a USB port.

So you could try plugging a mouse (or PC joystick) into the USB port to select games.

Those multi-game boards are not "legitimate" as such - the games have usually been modified in some way for various reasons, but for fun at home noone will notice/care :)

Theyre pretty straight forward units, I have one myself that I'm in process (try years) of tidying up.

Get access to the internals, and its just a matter of following the cables, seeing what connectors, and then replacing. As for the sound, they usually just have a single speaker or two above the screen that you can replace easily - probably find a cable has come away and needs soldering back onto the speaker.

Take photos of everything how it is, and start replacing/fixing things :)

Thats a MAME setup most likely and yeah, is literally just a PC with adaptor for the joysticks.

What the OP has described sounds like a proper arcade board type setup. As per my pics above.

On the plus side, if fixing the board does get too messy, they have a nice cabinet to put a MAME PC into :D
