The 'official' Minecraft hosting is stupidly priced imo. Quick googling leads me to three options

- Essential Mod (p2p hosting)
- Aternos
- Minehut

Ideally I'd like to upload an existing multiplayer world from a different server, or upload an existing single player world. None of that is essential or a dealbreaker.

Are there any serious gotchas with these 'free' services?

Anything "free" comes with gotchas.

Something like a free Minecraft server, you'll want hosted locally or Sydney at the furthest. (I assume the players are NZ based)

Better to spin up your own, is very easy to do these days.

If you're prepared to put in a bit of work/learning...

Sign up to Oracle Cloud and host it yourself at $0. The ARM tier is pretty good IMHO.

I've done this for my son . Its getting him to learn Linux too :)

I just installed Crafty Controller on our home 'server' and the kids use that and share with their friends.
We are on 2Degrees CG-NAT so use a free Playit.gg account to allow the remote access.
