So as a procrastination for my exam study, I decided to hook my ps3 up to my ACER v233H computer monitor (specs here)
I got myself a hdmi to dvi-d cable, plugged everything up and started it up.

The message I got on my monitor was along the lines of signal not supported. :(

The monitor has HDCP support along with full HD (1080p) support, so I thought the two should work well together.  Any ideas?  I changed the setting to HD on the ps3 prior to plugging it into the monitor.

The only thing I can think of is to try starting your PS3 in "Display reset" mode.
I'm not sure if that is the correct term (Display reset), however all you need to do is keep holding down the power button while you turn it on until you hear it beep once again after the first 'turn on' beep. It should reset the output resolution on HDMI (DVI) to something like 576p I believe. See if your monitor will handle that.

Hope that works.

Thank you for the reply. Just tried that and unfortunately the same message "input not supported". This is starting to get annoying.

Maybe I need to get a HDMI cable and then a hdmi to dvi-d adaptor? Maybe the HDMI->DVI-D cable has some sort of weird crossover in the cabling so that it only works for PC to monitor applications? (the cable is brand new and works fine, am using it right now to connect my PC to the monitor).

That's a bummer. Sorry, that was my only idea. Frown
Maybe someone else has had the same problem and will reply with a solution.
Good luck.

Great success!!  For some reason the monitor does not support 576p...  I had to hook it up to my hdmi tv and select 720p only (576p was included from factory).  Once the 720p was selected, the monitor immediately recognised the ps3 and was good to go!  It now plays on full 1080p.

Also tested it with my xbox 360 and 1080p is also good!!

So stoked lol

btw, does the forum not support image embedding?

Great to hear. Smile

Yes it does. You just have to use the full reply composer/editor.
 i.e. this button

The image must be a URL.
For example the image above is from https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/imagessubs/blogdc3135726d4d642ea9083936d95154f5.jpg
which is hosted on Geekzone. However I believe any image hosting site will work.
But I also believe that it is recommended to host it on geekzone if possible.
It should also be noted that only subscribers are able to host images on geekzone (100MB worth), and the maximum size of the image can only be 200KB.

Use this button to embed images:

thanks for that, not sure if it worked though, I'm used to a different system where you insert the link in between the a code of or similar.

EDIT, yup worked lol.
