why do gamers use consoles over the pc?  I owned a xbox once in my life and resold it after a months use. I hated it. I hated the silly hand control clearly made for babies to suck on I hated the fact your sitting on your couch looking at your TV screen this isn't gaming this is laziness.  Consoles bring out the worse in graphics compared to a PC gaming rig,  you can't upgrade well you can mod it I suppose but you just can't go throw in a new graphics card whenever you need too can you?. Your stuck with the same graphics till the next xbox/PS machine comes out.

A consolers reaction time is far slower compared to a PC gamer using a mouse I bet if a pc gamer verse a console player in a first person shooter we would beat them hands down every time.  Not long ago my son's mate came over who is a xbox fanatic while watching us play a lan match he was amazed at how fast we were at aiming of course this is 2nd nature to us pc gamers.

Consoles are dumb down machines an easy billion for Microsoft and Sony, on  the plus side you dont have to worry about upgrading your console every 2yrs to keep up with gaming you just wait for the next xbox /PS to come out.

PC gaming rigs are far superior. Your thoughts?

I hate the mouse, keyboard and pokey little screen I have to sit a foot away from - I have to use them at work all day and I don't want to go home and sit in front of another one.

Slouching out on the Layzboy playing a game or watching a Blu-ray on our PS3 on a 65" Plasma screen with 7.2 surround sound cranked right up shaking the gamesroom works for me.

It is just a pastime though, life doesn't revolve around it for me anyway.

In before thread lock.

Pc vs console threads always end up in flame wars, especially with an OP like that.

Just face up to it, each has it's advantages and disadvantages.

you have listed some of the PC advantages but consoles have advantages too

just off the top of my head:
very very easy to plug in and switch on.
much less likely to crash,
no fiddling about changing settings or downloading drivers to get your game to work,
sitting on a couch is comfy,
I can turn my PS3 on and be playing a game long before my PC has even loaded windows let alone the game itself,
controller is better for arcade type games,
consoles better for local multiplayer i.e. 2-4 players sitting together playing the same game,
cheaper upfront cost etc etc
online multiplayer is on a more even footing i.e. players can't get advantages from having macros or a faster rig.

At the end of the day it just comes down to personal preference. I own a PC for gaming and a PS3 for gaming and, depending on what I want to play, I will pick one or the other that day. My gaming is split about evenly between the two.

you are right about the FPS, Shadowrun (i think) tried the PC console multiplay and found that the pc users with mouse and keyboard had so much advantage over the consoles that the console players left in droves and the trial ended. i dont like the console controller, im all thumbs using it and i get frustrated , using the keyboard and mouse is more natural for me and i love how you can change all the settings in a game on the pc , and people used to complain about loading times on the pc, when these days some ps3 game are just as bad.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Once you get used to using the controller for an FPS it isn’t too bad.

It’s not as good as mouse/keyboard of course, but it is fine for single player and even for multiplayer since everyone else is using it too.

I prefer my PS3 for games for a couple of reasons :

1) I own an Apple Mac Mini as my home computer ... such a broad selection of games there ...
2) I like to be able to pick up any PS3 game and know that it will run just fine, not faffing about looking at the back of the box to see if I have enough Ghz,MBs or Gbs for it to install :-)

Yes games on a big rig PC are much more impressive ... but at a $$$ cost!

PC gaming has come back stronger than ever imo

Better graphics
Cheaper prices for games
Equal or better digital distribution through Steam etc
Can build a cheap small form factor box that can live near your TV (HTPC)
Multi purpose (HTPC, Web, Email, Gaming)
Can use USB controller for most games if you like
Can connect to a HDTV via HDMI or DVI no problems

Only got a PS3 because it was crazy cheap in the New Years sales and because there are a small handful of games that are console only eg: Rock Band 3, Red Dead Redemption etc.

I can't play FPS games on a console due to the controller. Most MMO's are PC only as well.

I resisted getting an XBox until they came with WiFi as standard, then Media Center became a big part of my decision to get one. Since then I've learned to love RPG's (Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect etc) on the XBox with big screen and surround sound as mentioned above... hard to beat.

I'd say I'm still primarily a PC gamer tho, and just ordered an Alienware M18X for that duty.

I am a PC gamer through and through.  I have tried playing on consoles, but struggled with it. That being said it really comes down to what you get used to. With enough exposure I'm sure I would enjoy it too.

I have a NES from when I was younger and didnt have any issues playing side scroll games on that, nor on newer consoles. However, I first played FPS on PC so got used to the mouse and keyboard setup.

I like PC's cause I am a Tech/Geek/Nerd at heart, and love playing with settings and changing things. To me a console is too limited in what it can do (play games, movies)

Have been tempted to buy a console, but that would be only for things like Kinect :)

Oh yes there was one more reason, console games are more social, you can play them with friends ... over the internet play with a PC doesn't count in my books as you're still sitting on your lonesome :-)

, my son has his friends around at weekends, who bring there laptops and they sit there for hours playing Rift and if they dont come round then they all use Teamspeak and do the same thing from there bedrooms and when they get bored they browse the net together , way more social than consoles.

I enjoy turning it on having a thrash then turning it off. Simple system. Games made to suit it I don't have to change system.

Price and the fact you don't have to upgrade the graphics card every 6 months or when a newer game comes out, because they are built around the existing system

Plus racing games! I've never ever enjoyed a racing game on a PC..well apart from the original Need for Speeds back in the early/late 90s. No racing game on PC comes even close to Gran Turismo or the Forza series

But it depends on what you like, I like FPS and while I'm more accurate on the PC, I play more on the Playstation, since most of my mates are online with PS3s these days.

Could always get a LAN going, but the last few years I was always the one with the latest hardware, playing against two guys with 3+ year old hardware and one guy with a laptop. So I gave up! Too much hassle.

Playstation controllers also don't really care if you spill beer over them, unfortunately mostly HTPC keyboards do :(

For me it comes down to the type of game it is. FPS, RTS and MMO's IMO are better with a mouse and keyboard, however racing, fighting and sports I prefer using a controller. RPG's and TPS's I don't mind either way, depends more on the actual game.

But the mouse/keyboard vs controller debate is kinda pointless when you can use either with a PC and after googling, it doesn't look like it's completely out of the question to use a mouse/keyboard on a console either.

I've recently only just become a pc gamer, I started on console, because We always had sh*t computers. I mean DOS games would struggle to run. And the Xbox was cool especially hooked up to the Pioneer 5.1 surround sound dolby digital. Intense stuff, it was also cool as the whole family can jump in on the ONE console and play a game, you don't have to have your own rig to play multiplayer or anything.
Also online gaming is made easier, your don't have to find a local server, you're just sent to a local game, Ping doesn't matter with console gamers, alot of them dont even know what it is, Unless they're a pc gamer aswell, you can just search for a game, it'll drop you in, and BOOM, you're playing. No private servers sitting there with the lowest ping you've ever seen mocking you because you aren't a part of their group... you don't even see that on a console.

But PC is cool, as games are cheaper, it uses less bandwidth, I've basically built my computer, starting from a start-up shell, so I'm quite attached to it in that respect.
Also, DLC's that most console gamers have to pay for are free with PC games.
there are pros and cons to them all, and everyone has their own preferences.

I like Xbox over PS3. It's an opinion.
I like PC over mac. It's an opinion.
I like playing both PC and Xbox games. It's an opinion, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks is better, it's just what they prefer.
