Came across this video of an Australian company claiming to have broken the "Polygon Budget" barrier, and instead of using Polygons to create realistic graphics which consumed way too much resources, they are now using even smaller things called "Atoms" to develop graphics that's even less intensive than Polygons so they can practically use an unlimited amount too!

You really have to watch the video to understand how much of a breakthrough they have made.
For example, here is a screen shot of detail right down to the grains of sand.

Below the video there's a link to the official company web site and on their frontpage there is the original video:

What he doesn't say is what kind of hardware you will need. Will it run on current's top of market cards or require something newer? What software will be needed for the cards?

All still a bit "vapourware"...

Back in the 80s when I had an interest in graphics, there was a thought that in the future sometime people might be able to do real time ray tracing - wonder how far of they are now?

What I've read on this is that it's not as possible as they say, Notch of Minecraft fame has this to say about it;
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/8386977075/its-a-scam

It looks pretty cool but they don't have any action happening, it's a purely static environment and far too repetitive, they claim not to have any designers working there but that's a joke, they have designers, lazy ones, if you are showcasing something to show it off

I think John Carmack of Id fame said it will be possible in a couple of years but not feasible any time soon and he had worked on something similar.

I'll believe it when I see it in action running on a pc in front of me.

Hard to imagine why you'd ever need dirt that is that detailed in the first place!

As I understand it all the data is stored in memory and the engine renders only the pixels required for the resolution of your display.

Sounds nice in theory but the development process (assets that are not scanned in, animation, non repeating textures etc.) for a game would be horrendous.

Once this caveman idea of viewing worlds through a 20in screen changes to actually transporting into the world through some virtual reality device where we can completely lose ourselves for days then it gets realistic. In the near future hopefully when I'm still around virtual reality could be a 2nd life we can choose and live out for the rest of our days. That would be sweet.

The jist of it being their demo videos show no animation or dynamic content so it's probably a voxel based engine (which is not new) and has serious limitations around animation and non repetitive content.

Agree here, even if it was real it has no practical application to games.  Who cares if you can see individual grains of sand. I don’t want to play a game where looking that closely at grains of sand is one of the activities. I want to be blowing the crap out of aliens or zombies or Nazis  or alien zombie nazis. Don’t’ need that level of detail for that sort of thing.
