chevrolux: Cable tie and cat wire is your only option I am quite sure. Massive pain in the butt putting all the zip ties on but what are apprentices for right?

You can definitely get SSA CAT5e from overseas. It depends on if you can source it cheap enough.

ElectronicFerret: Did anyone manage to find an NZ supplier? It's going to cost me NZ$750 for a 305m roll landed in NZ from the USA.

I've recently done some jobs where I've run fence wire and outdoor Cat5e overhead inside 15mm alkathene pipe (the fence wire was anchored at each end). It's way faster than cable tieing the cable to the fence wire every 10cm but gets expensive for long runs.

I did a 90 metre overhead run in the same way you mentioned i.e. with 15mm alkathene pipe. About every 5 metres I used a 2 metre pole similar to a Waratah with a slide-on extension. At the top of each pole I bolted a large eye bolt which was just big enough to allow a 15mm alkathene jointer to pass through, so this provided strain relief for just that particular 5 metre section.

No catenary wire needed and I was able to use standard indoor-grade ethernet cable as it was shielded from sun and rain. This lash-up provided my broadband connection for 8 years until RBI arrived. 10Base-T Ethernet worked fine over the 90 metre run and was plenty fast enough, given that my broadband connection in those days was only 1Mbps.

Have you tried TE (Tyco) since they do alot of that type of thing, at least for fibre. Not sure if Molex or General Cable stock messenger wire cable in NZ but could try.

Time to find a new industry!

if you go the cable tie route make sure you use outdoor/UV rated cable ties and Cat5e ... it goes without saying but non rated cable ties just disintegrate after 1-2 years.
