Ipv89: I decided to just take the easy route and grabbed a nighthawk R7000 and wow is it disappointing. I am getting around 600mps over Ethernet. I was getting 950 with the crappy Vodafone router

Install Advanced Tomato and enable hardware Nat. It'll Max out your line.
Awsome advise, I am now pulling 900mbps, is there any other settings that will help push this to the 950 I was getting? Also why on earth is it advertised as supporting GB wan if it cant do that with the stock firmware?

Not sure - it has been quite a while since I last had one of these routers. I am sure @mdf can comment when his Gigabit cable gets installed. 900Mbit is still damn fast and you'll be hard pressed to use all that bandwidth on anything apart from a NZ speedtest.

Yeah I was just about to post back saying that its fluctuating between 900 and 950 - thats about as good as the connection is I think.
With this new firmware I can reach about 250mbps on 5GHZ but only 60mbps on 2.4

I asked the same query in another thread, but what is key "specification" (for want of a better word) that determines whether or not a router can deal with a gigabit connection? The HG659b has a relatively modest 400MHz dual core processor and 128MB RAM, but can outperform a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with a 1GHz dual core processer and 256 MB RAM (at least on stock firmware).
I'm therefore guessing that CPU and RAM aren't the determining features/specifications? I know I've seen talk of cut through forwarding and hardware accelerated NAT in other threads but don't know if these are the keys to the Huawei's performance or not.

You will love it :), when is your install? Yeah I would like to know why such a cheap router can outperform much more expensive routers.
With advanced tomato I am enjoying the R7000 but the 2.4 GHz wifi is terrible.
chevrolux: I would love to see how a Mikrotik rb3011 does on a Giga bit connection. Anyone got one?
We run the baby CCR (9 core cpu I think) in our office on a 200/200 and it's bloody hard to make that even break a sweat.
According to spec sheet on the bottom it should do fine with large packet sizes and not too many IP rules
I am no longer using the r7000 not a good router at all in my experience. My next option might be a Edge Router Lite. Still contemplating the PfSense build however it looks like you need a very good cpu for Gigabit wan.

60Mbps is pretty good for 2.4GHz, especially if you're in an urban environment.

Finding the interface somewhat painful to negotiate currently.
I think I need to set the vlan tagging but I can't figure out how to do so.
Any assistance appreciated.
Advanced Settings --> VLAN --> tick the box to enable tagging on the WAN port. There's some notes at the bottom too.
Disclaimer: My install is (fingers crossed) tomorrow so haven't confirmed that this actually works yet.

Actually appears that it won't save the setting. So I'm not sure what's going on there.
TO be honest, I am seriously considering switching back to stock firmware since I cannot even get this to work. That, at least worked and gave me 500-600Mbps. THis is giving me 0.
