Google WiFi is a horrible product.
IMHO the Spark router and WiFi extenders (which like any AP are best cabled via Ethernet if possible rather than using WiFi meshing) are a far superior solution.
I have brought the Google Nest WiFi back into my network. I am connected to 2degrees with VLAN ID 10. This is the software version I am running - notice the model H2D:

Hi, as you can see its not the latest version, well perhaps is for your hardware. 13099.118.19 is the one that creates issues, very long thread on Google WiFi support regarding it.
Folk in the states who have had the issue are getting sent new hardware from Google, only to find exact issue remains, continual disconnections or dramatic reduction in throughput, rebooting fix's it for a short while, then its screwed again.

aploeger:
Definitely the Nest Wifi...
Where did you buy this from? Was it brand new or 2nd hand? I'm wondering if you have the 1st Gen Nest WiFi
Ok, my Google Nest updated to 13099.118.19 now (despite saying it was up-to-date before).
Still working on 2degrees with VLAN.

@aploeger can you check and let us know which hardware version is this?

I suspect a lot of people have old hardware and something is not working. It would be good to see what "Model" you folks have.

Same model "H2D" and now also on that latest firmware, although it was on an older firmware version when I was setting it up.
Also, I configured it through the Google Home app (as is now recommended by Google).
It looks like you set it up through the OnHub app, which was later rebranded as the Google WiFi app (c'mon Google...). You're also on Android where I'm on iOS, so the core libraries of those apps are likely to be slightly different.
The Google WiFi app does seem to have a lot more settings, so I'll do a factory reset and try another set-up through the Google Wifi app and see if that makes a difference. I'll report back.
If the firmware was updated then the device can connect to the Internet. I found out the messages are pretty crap - no word on update happening and Internet was disconnected for five minutes while this was happening, while I had no idea why things stopped. Overall a bad experience but it seems to work.
I actually used Google Home to setup but Google WiFi also works - I use it because it seems to have more options on DNS, but either should work.

Success! I've now got my Nest WiFi directly plugged into the ONT and connecting over Spark. [Nest firmware version 13099.118.19]
After doing a factory reset I first tried the Google Wifi app, but that's now a dead end on iOS:
Then tried the iOS Google Home app. First attempt failed, with no specific error message. Tried again, the set-up screens seemed slightly different this time. Set up as PPOE with "user@spark.co.nz" and "password". At no point was I asked for a VLAN value, so it looks like it worked that out automatically.
Thanks all for your comments and thank you Mauricio for making the effort to plug it in and share your set-up. Without that I would've just given up. Google's got some work to do on the UX, but very happy to finally get rid of that Spark modem and simplify my network set-up.
It does not ask for VLAN as it automatically try it, as you found out.
The UX is terrible, you are right. And automatic updates is good but there's no notification while the router is restarting to apply updates.
But it does work.

hi folks, this thread has been super helpful; thank you. However I am stuck and looking for some help.
I am trying to to set-up a Google Nest Router - Hardware version is H2D and I have a spark fibre with OTP box, I have tried with other 2 other routers and internet works fine. So it appears to be a specific google issue.
My issue is I can't get the Nest Router to connect to the internet.
* It recognises the device and says connection successful following scan of QR code via google home device install.
* it then says it is checking internet connection, where it fails and sends to the screen that recommends disconnect the modem and router and then plugging them back in (tried this multiple times with no success). It provides the ability to enter WAN details bottom left, which I do using PPPoE details 'user@spark.co.nz' and 'password'. - when I hit save it throws me back to the connection failed screen and recommends I do the disconnect modem and router. (I have a single ethernet cable going from LAN1 on OTP to the Nest plug which has the globe.
*first time I connected and did this it give me the VLAN is not supported per above - but this no longer happens.
I can't find out the firmware version as I can't get it to recognise as a device in google home due to not being able to get a connection to the web. I have tried factory reset of the router using the bottom on the bottom but no success!
Any suggestions?
- do I need to change in modem settings etc..
- any other way to check firmware version when it does not show in google home app?
Thanks
Ben
it does the first connection to the device then
Hi, if you have another router to get online, then plug the WAN of the Google unit into the LAN of the other router with the WAN set to DHCP, it will then get online, you can sort it from there.
Cyril
Good suggestion. It will also help if it needs to do any update - if it goes online and a few minutes later you are offline again let it be for ten minutes as it takes its sweet time to update things and restart.

Nice one. connected via the other router which worked; seemed to do it's updates to firmware etc..
Then plugged it direct into the ONT and had to do a reset of the Nest Router... 3 or 4 random errors later (each seemed to move it 1 step forward and bingo! all connected and working!
Thanks for the help - much appreciated.
