Hi,

I'm trying to connect 2 PCs via bluetooth and share an internet connection. The first PC has XP home with a Belkin USB bluetooth and has the internet connection. The second PC has XP prof with a Belkin PCMCIA Bluetooth card. When I try to connect from the 2nd PC to the 1st PC through the blutooth network access service, the two computers seem to connect except that I'm prompted for a username and password from the bluetoothnullconnection. Does anyone know what this connection does? and what username password I should be using?

Just as a bit of backgorund - this is what I've done to try and get internet connection sharing going:

On the 1st PC I ran the 'Home Network Connection Wizard' selecting the option for other PCs to connect to the 1st PC. My internet connection has the firewall enabled as well as all other internet connection options checked under the 'advanced tab' of its properties. This was done through the wizard. I noticed that a network brigde was created in the network settings.

On the 2nd PC I ran the 'Home network connection wizard' selecting the option to access another computers internet connection. Under the bluetooth LAN I made sure that the TCP/IP had an IP & subnet mask of 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0. I noticed that a bluetoothnullconnection had also been created.

Any help appreciated.

Don't enter anything on this username and password request. Simply select the box to save this password and press the OK button.

If after connection the access doesn't work, try the following:

  • enter the 192.168.0.1 address in the Bluetooth adapter configuration on the PC that will receive the connection. Use ICS from your Internet Connection to this adapter or create a Bridge between both. You can enter the DNS addresses in this Bluetooth adapter too.
  • on your client computer configure the Bluetooth adapter to have all IP with automatic assignement.

Thanks Mauricio, I can now internet share.

Just one other question re. the Nullconnection - Do you know of a way to automate that connection (ie to automatically connect everytime I connect the network access service)

If you know that the client PC will always connect through this method, you can open Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options and change the tab to Connections.

You can then select the BluetoothNullConnection and select the box "Dial when no network present" or "Always dial my default connection".

    Cheers

The client actually sometimes contents through its own dial-up connection - so I guess it's best to leave this the way it is.

With my current internet sharing setup and 2 bluetooth adapters would you know if I can:
    1. Print a document from the host to the client's printer over bluetooth
    2. Browse the client machines files using explorer (I have folder shares enabled on the client machine)
    3. When the client machine is connected through its own dial-up connection - to be able to share that access.

or do I need to have a network setup in another way?

You can share folders and printers if you are using the Bluetooth PAN. You use this when your configuration is set like the dialog below:

You can share a dial-up connection in the same way you share other internet connection, but instead of looking for a ethernet adapter to enable ICS, you'll do it on your dial-up configuration.

Thanks, but I have a Belkin PC Card bluetooth device and the latest drivers are 2 years old - and don't have this option for the network access service. On the desktop machine I can make the switch to private network in the bluetooth properties - but still can't get access.

What I might try, however, is to run through WINXPs home networking wizard and instead choose to set up network without internet connection sharing.
