Hi All,

I'm in a new build. I have a heap of CAT6 running from various locations back to a patch panel. I have a temporary setup that someone did quickly and I want to sort it out correctly. I have a VDSL splitter, modem, telco module switch and router etc.

I have a CAT6 coming from the ETP and I'd like to wire so that I can plug patch cables in to the telco module and then in to the patch panel so that those locations can have phone.

I'd like the internet to run to the switch so that I can link the various ports to the patch panel.

I'm not sure the order of things or where to punch them all in to.

ETP>Splitter? How?
ETP>Telco module?
Telco module>Splitter? How? I have attached a sketch of the current wiring. This links one phone port (Scull2) and one internet (iMac).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Run from the ETP should terminate on patch panel. Everything else is then patch from there.

The cable from ETP will terminate on your 'Telco module'. Some of them have a place to put a splitter, otherwise just hang it off to the side. So then you can just use the flying lead off the splitter (green pair) and terminate that on a jack and plug your modem in.

I would terminate the ETP at the patch panel and then plug it from that port to the telco module, gives you some flexibility around swapping out the telco module. But it depends on if you see yourself tweaking your hardware/setup at any stage

Otherwise straight to the telco module should be fine

Your telco and router need to connect to each other, then both connect to ports on your patch panel and back to the jack points

Thanks guys. Where does the splitter and modem come in?

If I punch the ETP cable to the telco module, should I punch the O/O+W (Line) of the splitter in to the telco expansion slot? Then terminate the splitters G/G+W (Modem) with a RJ12? Plug the RJ12 in to the modem? (or easier: punch the G/G+W (modem) in to the patch panel and buy a pre-made RJ45-RJ12 and plug that in to the modem?)

Cheers.

Hi, sounds like you are using a inwall modular system, in which case you may not have many patch panel jacks to play with, hence the Teleco module.

I would not use the Telco module, infact I would say it would adversely effect VDSL2 performance. I would either use a data panel to create a DSL and voice patch panel or get a ST2206 or ST2208 to do the job.

For reference I have attached the pictures of the equipment I am working with. I have enough slots in the patch panel to finish the wiring.

Punch blue pair from splitter into telco module. Punch green pair into a spare patch panel port on the blue.
Can't quite see photo clearly, but looks like there maybe a little too much untwist on the punch downs; could just be blurry photo when I zoom close up though. Twist should be maintain as close as possible to punch downs.

Thanks CoffeeBaron. I've attached a picture of my punch downs. I understand what you're saying. I just made the sleeve come to the middle with each cable and punched in as close as I could. I won't show you the wall sockets the electricians did then!!! Under your comment, I think I'll be doing all the wall sockets again!

Hi, yeah just build a phone patch on the spare ports of your 24port panels, and yes you have destroyed all the goodness of your cat6 cable by untwisting so much, may as well have installed original cat5 cable (thats the one worse than cat5e).

Yup, a bit two much untwist :( You might get away with it on short runs, but this is the kind of stuff that causes niggley little (or big) intermittent issues. E.G. Gigabit ports running at only 100Mbps, or intermittent network disconnects etc.

Thanks guys. I'm a touch gutted . Looks like I've waisted a good amount of time and paid for someone to do an even worse job on the wall sockets. Looks like tomorrows job (while the weather isn't favourable for outdoor tasks) is to tear it all apart and start again. The good news is, that doing it correctly will actually take less time than it took me to straighten all the cores! Thanks again and I'll get back in touch if I have any further problems.

Hi Guys,

I've finally finished the re-wire of the patch panel and have successfully managed to get the internet to work. The phone, however, is a different story.

I have attached a few pictures to show the current wiring configuration.

SPLITTER G/W punched in to Patch Panel on 18 B/BW
SPLITTER O/W punched in to Patch Panel on 19 B/BW
SPLITTER B/W punched in to Telco Module B/W(???)

PATCH PANEL 18>PABX Master connector to Modem
TELCO MODULE>PATCH PANEL 13>PABX Master connector>Phone

Out of Patch Panel 18 I have used a PABX Master connector to the modem. I am unsure what this does and I only used it because it enabled me to use the cables I had already. The result worked. The Telco Module is plugged in to Patch Panel 13 and that is connected to the location where my phone is. The phone is connected to the socket using another PABX Master connector because it enabled me to use existing cables. This doesn't work. NOTE: I ahve tried swapping the B/W punched in to the Telco Module incase I got these round the wrong way. This didn't help.

Anyone able to tell me what I should do to get it to work and/or a better way to wire this all up if I have not done it optimally?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I would never put it together like that, I would scotch loc the inbound line to the Filter Line In (Or) and punch the Filter Modem port (Green) to a Port 17, and the Voice (Blue) to the phone module as you currently have.

Make or get a RJ45-RJ11 line cord and use this to patch the modem to Port17.

As for the voice not working have you turned the security switch off?
