As you can see from the image  I have a fibre ONT, a spark supplied modem 10mbps , an 8 port bar and a Synology NAS box.

This was a professional install and not what I expected at all as I only have 3 rooms (out of 9) with internet and 1 x nas drive connected. The sparky said I need a switch and I have purchased a 16 port TP Link 10/100 switch but unsure of how it fits into this setup.
Also how can i tidy this mess up ? I cant close the cabinet door with all the cables coming out of it and the modem, NAS and switch need to be mounted somehow to avoid getting knocked over as it is in the garage.

There is also a 9th ethernet cable dangling as the bar is only 8 port - will this just plug directly into the switch ?

Any guidance on what to do from here on in would be greatly appreciated

Did you pay someone to do this?! If yes, tell them to take half an hour and tidy it up. That's slack as.

16-port switch seems over the top. A small 8-port will do nicely and fit nicely in the cabinet.

For the NAS, I would have installed an outlet next to the cabinet just so I could shut the door and not have cables jammed in it.

That is a disgrace, there is no excuse for work like that.

I am particularly concerned by what appears to be a power point floating in the breeze.

Would you mind posting some more detailed photos please.

Where are you based? If you're in Wellington I would be more than happy to clean up this mess for you.

I am OCD, very very OCD and actually want to clean this up.

Also the problem with that router being in the cabinet is quite simply it'll not be able to give your house proper WiFi. What I would recommend (depending on your house) is having one ethernet cable coming from the ONT to a port central in the house where you can put your router, and another port coming from the router back to the cabinet to the switch (connected to the rest of the network), from here install the NAS somewhere in the house connected to another Ethernet socket.

I would also recommend upping that switch from the 10/100mbit one you've got to lets say a 8pt 1gbit switch for the best data speeds from the NAS, depending on how much money you've got to burn I'd recommend getting a UniFi access point installed central in the house and upgrading the router to something a little more beefy - the majority of the gear can nicely fit in the cabinet with a little bit of moving around.

just to clarify the house is a new one and when we moved in the cabinet looked like this

THen chorus installed the fibre ONT and the electricians job was to then connect up the ethernet cabling to the fibre

they installed an 8 port bar and I gave them a 4 plug box so they could plug the ONT, modem and NAS into. That cost $550 for their services

I placed an old desk in front of the cabinet to support the NAS and modem

Now i need to install the switch and think of a better way to support the NAS, modem and switch. The modem is a bottleneck and as mentioned by michaelmurfy i apparently need to upgrade the switch. (I am in West Auckland unfortunately Michael but wish i could get you to OCD this for me as it needs it )
The switch was cheap so thats not an issue. And yes the wifi is crap - poor signal upstairs and the back of the house.

I would happily pay for a real pro to come out and sort out my ethernet and enable the maximum speed of the NAS which is a Synology DS415+ (12TB). If not then I have to attempt myself and to be honest Im not looking forward to it !

You are right to be upset! That is terrible.

The point of a network cabinet is to keep to keep network equipment in it.

You don't seem to have any network equipment in your cabinet!

Whoever installed that should be ashamed.

I'd go back to your installer and get it tidied up.

Then, please post an updated photo.

I don't think we can really help until you have used all your consumer rights.

lol your right there is no kit inside the cabinet and the wife is the one more upset than me as it looks a mess
i have taken a more philosophical approach and just want to move forward and get it set up properly rather than stressing out fighting crappy electricians. I already got the bill reduced from $775 which is what they first invoiced me for. I dont really want them back and they will want to charge even more to come back.

I really just need advice on how to go about it or if I can get it done properly at a reasonable cost that would be much more preferable.

Looks like we posted at roughly same time.

I didn't see your post.

You have paid $550 ... for that you should expect a competency on their part. I don't think you got it.

I think the first step is combine all your outlying Ethernet cables.

I would have a patch panel somewhere at the top left of your cabinet ( based on your original layout)

Someone charged $550 for making that mess?

No wonder all the sparkys are driving flash new utes.

I am still concerned by that socket. It's simply not OK to run the cable through the enclosure like that. Is the socket even screwed down?

FYI, here is what a cabinet like that can and possibly should look like.

thanks guys

i will PM the coffee guy and go from there

And yes that socket is not screwed down - I hope to get the power cabling tidied up as well as the data cables.

Be nice to end up with a tidy looking cabinet like the one above and a door that closed would be a bonus !!

Spark chose a retarded modem design. The only thing to do is mount that face down and hope the door will close while pushing on the cables.
