Looking at getting a new WiFi router, looking at an ASUS RT-AC58U, Not needing all the hi tech bells and whistles just some good range, mostly just for surfing on tables, Chromecast and perhaps some streaming for an Android set top box. We have issues with signal strength for existing system, Murphy's Law has the current router at opposite end of house from bedrooms 15 m, timber home.

you dont need a new router, you need an access point at the other end of the house where you use it.

No need for a new router - you just need an access point like a UniFi AC-LR. Depending on how big your house is you may want a couple and ceiling mount them (you'll need to run Ethernet to each AP).

running ethernet cables is just NOT an option for many NZ home owners & renters

If you cant run ethernet cable for another "access point", look at a powerline kit (get one with wifi)

In an ideal world:

Your best option is to always minimise the distance between the wireless clients and the radio antennas.  In a residential house your best option is to, as previously advised, run Ethernet cables to access points around your house.  If that is not possible, which is entirely reasonable, then another option is an external directional antenna.  If the router is in the corner of the house, say the south eastern corner for this example, then mount the external directional antenna towards the north western corner of the house.  Depending on the shape of your house you need a directional antenna with a 60 or 120 degree horizontal beamwidth.  What this means is that half the signal will be directed horizontally 30 degrees (60 degree antenna) or 60 degrees (120 degree antenna) either side of perpendicular.  The worst antenna choice is an internal omni, followed by an external omni, as these will direct signal in a 360 degree horizontal pattern and half of your signal (to the south, south east and east) will be directed out of the house and be "wasted".  The external directional antenna will take that "wasted" signal and direct it through your house.

Most likely:

Purchase a cheap PowerLine kit (~$120) from PB Tech and run it down to the other end of the house to the wireless router.
