Hi everyone,
Just a few questions about how best to set up a home network, and also stream to a PS3.
I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router, laptop, and a PS3 (and the flatmates contribute a further two laptops to the household, on being a MacBook). My laptop essentially going to be the central unit, connected to a large External HDD with media.
Currently I'm using WMP11 to stream to the PS3 wirelessly (its working well, although I'd prefer something like TVersity which will let me view/listen to essentially any encoding type), but I'm wondering whether it would be better to have both the laptop and PS3 connected to the router via ethernet connection (in terms of streaming to the PS3 over the network, being the main consideration)?
So the questions I have are:
- will it be better to connect the laptop and PS3 via a wired connection?
- should I use TVersity, stick with WMP11, or something else for streaming?
- how difficult is it going to be for the mac to connect to the network?
- although its not a consideration for right now, I will want a PSP to connect to the PS3 for remote play later. How do I get it to see the media server the PS3 is connected to, or is that automatic?
Now don't be too harsh on me, I'm completely new to this networking stuff!
EDIT: If its not completely clear, the others will be connecting to the network via wireless.
EDIT: OK, mac connectivity sorted (easy, as it turns out). Now have a movie streaming to the mac while music is being streamed to my PS3, pretty cool... Now only need a few hundred man-hours adjusting my ID3 tags in my music collection!
Now all I need to know about is whether wired connections between my laptop+ps3 to the router are superior to what I currently have... anybody?
