Hey

I am using the asus gt-ax11000 router with my netcomm NF18ACV modem from Orcon. So I'm meant to be getting over 800Mbps down and Over 400Mbps up. Once ive set the router up though i only get 170Mbps down and 340 Mbps up. My line test is fine when i run it through the router and if i go through the netcomm i get the speeds from the speedtest im meant to be getting.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Why are you using two routers? Do you have double NAT?

netcomm is the standard modem/router that gets sent out so i got the ROG for better performance

But putting the two in concaternation will make things worse especially as now you have double nat.

cyril7: Does i't support vlan tagging on the wan interface, if so the probably yes.

Most of these domestic super duper gaming routers are not worth the money you pay as they cannot route at gig speeds we have in NZ, I could be wrong and others may correct me but most of these perform worse than the ISP supplied router, and may be better used simply as a glorified WAP.

I dont see anything for vLan on the asus but on the netcomm one yeah

I believe in Asus routers the VLAN tagging setting is under the IPTV settings

PB Tech shows it as “fibre ready”.

Go here and use the settings for one of the other ASUS routers to set your one up. Remove the Netcomm one from your setup.

OP, just curious and please don’t take any offence, but after asking the type of question you have which suggests a fairly basic level of knowledge around routers and networks, why did you spend hundreds of dollars on this particular router for “better performance”? Hopefully you weren’t duped by all the marketing and exciting stats and figures they use?

Thank you for your help and no offence taken. I'd say i have been duped. Ive been looking at this for a while now and thought a 10gig router would be a decent way to get the performance and future proof but yeah not so sure now

I can't speak to it's WAN performance, but ASUS should actually get done over by the commerce commission for the way they advertise this. They call it a "10 gigabit" router, because the combined (theoretical!) bandwidth of it's 3 wifi frequencies exceeds 10gbps. It doesn't have a single 10GigE port on it.

As per all the tests I've done, I've proven that these routers are utterly rubbish for the price you pay.

If you want better performance over WiFi then consider something like the Ubiquiti AmpliFi instead. There however has been reports it can't quite handle Gigabit but can handle very close to Gigabit on Ethernet. This is a software limitation of the AmpliFi and I'm told it should be fixed soon.

Ideally, you want to take your current Netcomm router out of the loop and just have the new router directly wired into the ONT. Orcon is VLAN 10 w/ DHCP from memory.

Return that Asus - it is rubbish. They were happy to send me one to review right up to the point I told them I'll be performance testing it on Gigabit. They then told me "we can't do that" which says something in itself. You can actually get a full high performance enterprise grade network with great WiFi etc for the price you paid for that router.

AFi-R will manage about 800 down / 450 up - but that's on a Spark connection so with the overhead of it also having to do PPPoE - should manage a bit higher without
