I have the first HG659 (device1) connected to the ONT.  A cable to the granny flat and another HG659 (device2) , currently connected to together with the LAN ports, with device2 set to DHCP off and static IP on the same subnet (Outside device1's DHCP pool).  This works fine, but the kids can accidently (maybe on purpose) connect to the granny flat TV with chrome cast and this is not ideal in this suitation.

Can I connected the WAN port on device2 (in flat) to the LAN port of the HG659 (device1)?  I have tried and it connects but does not work.

The problem appears to be setting the WAN port (device2 in flat) IP number so it is inside the subnet of the device1.

Then I guess I set the device2 DHCP up so the connected devices there have their own network, then the kids will not stir up Granny.

If this is not possible on the HG659, then what device should I put in the granny flat?

Mike

HG659 is not suitable for what you are trying to achieve

You really need a router two internal network segments that can firewall from
each other

I guess if you turn the vlan 10 tagging off in the wan of the granny flat router and double nat to the internet it would achieve what you want but its a bit of a hodge podge solution

Yes, it can be done. Granny flat become double-NAT, which may not be an issue for granny.

But I don't understand why the kids connecting to granny flat AP is an issue????

Is it Granny is watching Country Calendar and the kids turn on the Chromecast - kinda like someone pinching the remote and changing channels?

just have the wifi in the granny flat on a different SSID to the house and have the chromecast connect to that. then don't give the kids the password to the wifi

Subnet on HG659s typically can't be changed hence double NAT solution not possible.

That wont help if the wifi at each site is on the same wired network, you need to segment the internal network into two

Do you need two networks. Run both locations on the same sub-net.

Just treat HG659#2 as a WiFi LAN switch.

Let HG659#1 issue DHCPs.

Have 2 WiFi SSIDs.

Maybe this would work?

As mentioned you will need seperate L3 subnets to stop the chromecast devices from discovering each other, using residential type routes will not work, I suggest you invest in a decent router, ie Edgerouter or Mikrotik.

That WONT stop the casting in the Granny Flat! you need to segment the network

Why are many people under the assumption that you can’t change any settings on the hg659?

Under Admin, you can definitely change the subnet allowing for double-NAT. It’s the basis of having voip and Vodafone TV still work behind a third-party router.

OP turn off vlan tagging on the second hg659 for it’s WAN port, by default it’ll be set to 10 when your first hg659 already de-tags it. You had it right the first time, 1st hg659 lan into 2nd hg659 wan

Edit: just to be clear the hg659 is even smart enough to know if the default 192.168.1.0/16 is used already. Once it’s WAN connects to the 1st hg659 dhcp and obtains a 192.168.1.x it will restart and assign itself a 192.168.2.0/16 on it’s local plus dhcp settings.

Source: I’ve done this myself to get voip working on vodafone.

Hopefully you meant /24 subnets not /16, otherwise you are back to square one, and I agree with nztim, to use two routers of this calibre in concatination is a hodge podge.

I have tried to edit the VLAN settings and my firmware does not have any options to edit any of those connections.

Currently had Vodafone software V100R001C206B020 on it.

I have had a search around and I'm not sure what version of firmware to load that gives access and where to get it from.

Any Ideas where to get alternative software that allows for the VLAN settins to be changed?

I found the way in.  The HG659 has a hidden admin.  The vodafone login is a cut down login.  Just need to try it out now.

Username: Admin

Please note: The username is case sensitive

Password: "@"and the last eight digits of your modem serial number

E.g. if your modem serial number is ABC0987654321 your password will be @87654321

The serial number is located at the back of the modem.
