I touched on this issue on GZ last August / September when I was at the start of my "networking journey" but didn't really find an answer and had to let it be and get on with life.
But last weekend, my system twice inexplicably lost interconnect connectivity after a long period of stability, and in resetting the Huawei and scrutinising all configurations, it got me rethinking about the old issue.
Which is that for some reason I seem to lose internet connection when I switch off DHCP and UPnP on the Huawei unit, and I can't figure out the logic of why this might be happening, although I'm no networking expert and someone on GZ may the answer straight away.
The key information is:
Wireless modem: Huawei B618S-65D (which cannot be put into bridged mode), configured:
- Connected to ER-X via WAN / LAN port
- Firewall disabled
- DHCP enabled* in range 192.168.1.100 to 250
- UPnP enabled*
- DMZ enabled, referenced to static ER-X WAN IP of 192.168.1.20
* As noted above, if these are disabled, internet connectivity is lost
Router: Edgerouter ER-X, configured:
- eth0 with static IP of 192.168.1.20 connected to B618
- eth1 connected to Unifi USW-8-60 PoE switch
- Firewalls enabled
- DHCP enabled on LAN and VLANs
- UPnP disabled by default
As I say, the system has been stable for a long while and may settle down again, but I can't figure out why DHCP and UPnP can't be disabled on the B618 without loss of internet, and don't know what adverse effects (if any) having them enabled may have
Does anyone have a similar experience or any ideas?
Thanks & regards,
