I'm on Spark fibre, using my own Asus RT-AC68U router.  Works well and has been working for years.  EXCEPT, on the occasions I have to reboot it.  When I do so, it takes forever to re-acquire an IP address from Spark.  In the region of 45 minutes to 1 hour.  Once it has a new WAN IP address from Spark, it will work for months without an issue.  Is this normal?  Is this everyone else's experience with Spark re-assigning an IP address (I could understand it being a minute or two)?  Or do I have a setting wrong on the router?  There isn't much in the way of setup required and I've carefully studied the few setup options on the WAN configuration screen.  I'm scared to play around too much because every reboot results in being offline for 45 minutes or so.  Or do a need a new router?  I still have the old VRV9517 supplied by Telecom but that lacked a couple of features I needed.  If anyone else has come across this issue before and has a simple fix, I would be eternally grateful.  Or is 45 minutes for an IP address typical Spark, and I'm just impatient?

Further on this, Spark's helpful suggestion was to factory reset the router.

Sparks BNG's get very grumpy if you're both requesting DHCP and PPPoE on a connection which some third party routers do - and it sounds like this is a case with yours.

Perhaps using third party firmware like Marlin could be a go here? Else if you wanted something really trouble free I can recommend the Spark Smart Modem 3 which is actually a great WiFi 6 router for $150 I think for Spark customers (the Spark Smart Mesh 2 pairs nicely with this if you need additional coverage).

Thanks for the note re DHCP and PPPoE.  I will check that out.  I haven't loaded the Marlin firmware.  Thought about it, but never got round to it.

Thanks for the comments re the Spark Modem 3.  I had been looking at that, it did look like an upgrade over the one I got from them several years ago.  But it is still Arcadyan, right?

Yep they’re Arcadyan routers but I’ve found them to be really stable and they have great WiFi too and for the price you really can’t go wrong.

On checking the router setup, I see that I have Enable VPN + DHCP Connection = Yes.

Googling suggests that this may be the source of the problem with long reconnection times.  I haven't plucked up the courage to try it yet but next time I need to do a reboot I'll see if this little setting is the problem.  Thanks for the pointer.

Yep that’ll be it. If you disable it things should work no problems.

I plucked up courage to try the change last night and it seems to have worked okay.  In the special requirement from ISP section, I just changed the Enable VPN + DHCP connection to no, rebooted, and I had a new IP address and internet working within about a minute.  Versus 30 - 45 minutes or more, which is why I was averse to making any router configuration changes or doing anything else that resulted in the internet going offline and acquiring a new WAN IP address.

There are helpful setup guides for this router on PBTech and other sites, but I don't recall any with details of the Special Requirement from ISP section.  There are only a handful of settings needed to get the router working with Spark, but no details about resetting the Enable VPN + DHCP one.  Spark's helpful comment about factory resetting the router will not help, as this setting is Yes by default.

Config diagram here for reference if anyone else is struggling with this.

Noted comments about the new Spark modem 3.  When I need an upgrade I will consider that.
