Hola,

I've followed the guides and I still cant get my ipaq to get a network connection with my desktop.

For one thing, I dont know how to get to this picture:
https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/images/forums/BTLAN.jpg

I'm using MSI bluetooth USB and if I double click on the BT icon in the taskbar, I get to a page showing My Bluetooth Places and Entire Bluetooth Neighbourhood. The only place I see anything resembling setups is by Bluetooth tab and clicking Device Configuration. Then I get access to Local Services, Client Services etc but nowhere do I find that page above.

When I click the shortcut to Network Access on MyPC in my Ipaq, I get the MyPC: Network Access Connecting... ... ... Connected and it asks me for a login, password and domain. I only entered the user name and then it starts dialing BT Network Access From Home using Bluetooth Null Modem. Its at this part that it takes a long time before it gives me a timeout message.

I check under settings and apparently it created a new connection called BT Network Access with a phone number of +1. Even if I delete this connection, it will keep creating another. I dont have any probs with that though, just that its annoying because it keeps changing the "When needed, automatically connect to The Internet using : " from "Internet Settings" to "Bluetooth Settings" and then I have to change it back to check my email.

I understand that I have to enable ICS for network access to work. I have another PC with WinXP and after enabling ICS, I could get the network connection fine. After the dialling as described above, it will say "Connected" and then the window will minimize automatically. This doesnt happen on win98, it will still be stuck in "Connecting..." I think its got to do with ICS for win98. Setting it up is different and when you install ICS from Windows Setup, it doesnt ask you which connection you want to use for internet and which is for home.

I dont have a connection for the internet, I just simply want a TCPIP connection between the win98 PC and the Ipaq so that I could run remote monitoring software. Basically the win98 PC wont be connected to any network and it will just sit there byitself and I want to be able to network my Ipaq with that PC so that I could execute some programs. Once my project is done, the win98 PC wont have a monitor.

So has anybody gotten bluetooth network access to work with win98?

btw, I can activesync fine to the win98 PC.
I can get network access with a winXP PC.

I just cant get network access with a win98 PC.

btw, what's the purpose of installing ICS? Do you really need this to be installed or is there a workaround?

You're almost there to access the dialog you're referring to. On the Services tab, double-click the Network Access service and you'll see the dialog.

ICS is needed because it'll assign some network information to your device by using DHCP. Simply installing ICS is not enough - you'll have to configure it by select the from network adapter and sharing the connection to another network adapter (in this case the Bluetooth).

You say you don't have a network on this Windows 98 machine, but you probably have another ethernet adapter?

Anyway, since you just want to network the Pocket PC to this machine you'll want the dialog to look like this:

In this case you can configure the Pocket PC with IP address (if it's an H5450 or anyone with Windows Mobile 2003) by going to Settings, changing to the Connections tab, opening the Connections icon and Switching to the Advanced tab.

There you'll tap the Network Card button and configure the Bluetooth PAN User Driver card.

This is only if you don't want to use the computer as a gateway to the internet, but to make a network access.

Thanks for the reply freitasm.. but I guess you're gonna have to walk me by the hand or I really have eyesight problems.

I cant find the services tab.

Unless you mean
this.

If I double click on Network Access, I only get
this.

Or is there something I'm missing?

btw, I dont have another network adapter. I installed ICS on the Win98 computer and I selected Dial-Up Adapter (one of my gprs connections) to be the one to be shared. Is that why it isnt working? I have to select a network adapter and not a dialup?

"In this case you can configure the Pocket PC with IP address (if it's an H5450 or anyone with Windows Mobile 2003) by going to Settings, changing to the Connections tab, opening the Connections icon and Switching to the Advanced tab. There you'll tap the Network Card button and configure the Bluetooth PAN User Driver card."

I followed your instructions by the word and lost at "Switching to the Advanced tab". I dont see an Advanced tab. I only see Connections tab and Dialing Locations tab. If I quit that page though, and go back to before I click the Connections icon, I see something called Network Adapters. Clicking it, I will see "Bluetooth PAN User Driver" and clicking Properties will let me specify and IP address, Subnet and Gateway and also Name Servers.

Will any IP do? Or do I have to set it to match the win98 PC?

Hmmm. Looking at the screenshots it seems like the drivers you're using are 1.2, not 1.3 or later. These drivers will allow you to have a connection sharing (you'll be able to access the internet and other computers on your local network) but not shared network access (access to shared drives for example).

The ICS (or bridge on XP) should work fine with a dial up connection.

What Pocket PC are you using?

I am using an Ipaq 3870 with the 54's widcomm drivers for bluetooth. That means I get the 54's bluetooth interface but I dont know if the drivers did any other thing different.

So, do I have to download the 1.3 version drivers? Where can I get them from?

The H3970 with the H5450 drivers will have some of the required software - but the Network part of it is in the OS, so it'll not work. It means you'll only be able to share an internet access and get access to resources on LAN (like a http server), but not to shared resources (like a shared drive).

You should check on the MSI website for update on their software.

Well finding the updated drivers for MSI bluetooth was quite a hassle I tell ya =P

Nevertheless, I've found it and successfully installed it. I installed ICS and at that page you showed above I selected connect to LAN via this PC. However I couldnt seem to be able to press the ICS Settings. I could press it but then nothing happens.

I went to my Ipaq and clicked the shortcut to Networking via Bluetooth. The first time, it worked! I was able to see my desktop's screen on my ipaq. Then I rebooted both the PC and the Ipaq and I could no longer access the network =( I dont know what happened.

(1) If I set the PC to "connect to LAN via this PC" I get the network connected message, then after a while it will say on the Ipaq: "Pocket PC Networking Error" and a message saying that it was unable to get an IP address from the server and that I should try again later or specify my own IP. The Network Access Icon is green though throughout on the PC.

(2) If I set the PC to "connect to private network" then on the PC I see the Network Access Icon turn green for a second then back to default. On the Ipaq it says as if its connected but clicking on Active Connections I see nothing is connected. And I cant disconnect the network access and I have to reboot the Ipaq.

I'm thinking I have to specify my own IP address.. but will any IP do? Does it have to be some standard format? Like 10.0.0.2 instead of 192.168.0.2? I had went into Settings->Connections->Network Adapters->Bluetooth PAN User Driver->Properties and set my IP as follows:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
and no name servers and it gives me the symptoms as in (2)

Do I have to specify DNS and WINS? Or is it a problem with the IP number I've chosen? Or is it because I configured the wrong adapter (ie, i shouldnt mess with BT Pan user driver)

Hrmm. I've uniinstalled ICS and installed again. Now it works!

But it works intermittently. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesnt.

This is me without fiddling with any settings. Sometimes when I boot, it works. And I disconnect, and connect it again, then sometimes it still connects, sometimes it doesnt.

I wonder why?

ICS on Windows 98 was just the first release - didn't work very well. Different from Windows 2000, where it's very well behaved.

So you think its a problem with the ICS and not with my PPC setup? Do you think getting a third party NAT would solve it? If so, then which one should I be looking for?

ICS on Windows 98 was not robust. You can try the demo version of Winrouter Lite which has muych more features - just be aware it'll be more complicated to configure since it is a complete routing solution.

Hmm, recently I've managed to connect my ipaq to the win98se ICS and using netnotify I get my IP to be 169.*.*.*.

However, I'm having a hard time finding out what the IP address of my win98 desktop. I tried to access 192.168.0.1 and it says couldnt find computer. I opened winipcfg from the desktop and looked at the ISHARE adapter's IP. It says 0.0.0.0.

I have no idea what the IP of my desktop is. I tried to connect just using the desktop's name (name is Bluetooth) and it couldnt find it either. I'm using win98se's ICS.

Any ideas? Btw, I installed wingate, but I dont know where to set the source of the sharing (dial up) and share it to which (bluetooth networking) so I uninstalled it.

WINIPCFG should give you this information. When running it, there's a drop down list with all adapters in your machine. You should see more than one (at least since you have the Bluetooth adapter and the other one used to connect to the Internet).

That was quick =) I did check under winipcfg.

The first one is the BLuetooth PAN User Network : 192.168.0.1
The second one is ICSHARE: 0.0.0.0

I tried to connect to both to no avail.

I know the IP of the ppc is 169.*.*.* (* = something)
