Hi there. So I have had my D-Link Wireless router for a couple of years now - no problems at all. On the odd occasion where I wanted to use Wi-Fi on laptops/Phones etc and forgot the password I would just simply start up a new network (New Name/Password etc) Anyway my phone (Nexus One) Decided about a week ago it would connect to a rememberd Wi-Fi network even though im pretty sure I had the correct Password (I did save it on a txt document but cant find it now)

Anyway, today I inserted the disc to restart the network. When I clicked Auto Run AVG came up saying that the disc has a trojan in it (That has never happened before) I moved it to the vault, restarted the PC and the Trojan just popped up again. I thought oh well I dont no how there can be a trojan on it. So I kept plodding along and I hit my first of two questions.

The Router could only see my internet connection when i turned OFF my Windows Firewall - Because AVG said it had a Trojan I was very sceptical.

My second Problem is that it is asking for my ISP Username + Password. I dont know why, and I have never seen this before on all the times I have restarted my network. I thought it wanted my username to log in to my usage etc, so I gave it thatm but it wants a username + Password that my ISP (Telecom) gave me from the very beginning when I started internet. Why is it asking for this, It never has before + do I need to ring Telecom?

I hopped out today and bought myself a new, what I thought was a Wireless Router, only to get home and work out its no wireless. Anyway I tried that (D-Link also) and it also asked for my username + Password.

Whats going on? I have never ever seen this on all the times I have started a new network.

Also I thought there was something like 101.1.1.1 that you could go to to change your password for your Wi-Fi. Not working for me now.

Thanks for all the help :)

The router needs to authenticate to telecom or whoever, if you reset it, then it loses those details.

Some xtra connecitons will work without any authentication details in the router, but it is normal for the router to have your ISP authentication details in it.

Ok fair enough. So I need to give Telecom a ring and ask for my username + Password so I can set up my Wireless router again?

If you have never needed a username/password combination that you can remember, it would be safe to use the default user@xtra.co.nz and password for the password.

The normal IP address to access a telecom supplied Dlink is 10.1.1.1 with the user admin and password admin. A standard Dlink would normally have an IP of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 although the easiest way to determine the routers address is to enter ipconfig in the command prompt. It is noted as Default Gateway.

So im still stuck. I can use the Net now on my Modem, but not Wireless router.
However in saying that I did make some progress today. I went through the installation CD AGAIN (for about the 100th time). After the installation not reading my internet connection numerous times it eventually saw that I do infact have a connection. I eventually could surf the web with my Router connected my modem (Just like normal) and could use Wi-Fi on my phone.

I went into the Wireless router setting (192.168.0.1 I think it was) and put a password on my network ? everything saved and I thought everything was fine (I did this while the installation CD was still going through the steps)

Anyway so I kept going through the CD, set it up until it asked for my Username + Password again. I tried a couple of what I thought could be right but none worked. So I rung up Telecom and got my Username + She also generated a new password for me. I tried this and it didn?t work. This is pretty much the final step.

I don?t know what to do now. All this has never happened to me before, I know what to do because ive created a new network numerous times before.

Could my Wireless router just be screwing up and not reading something?

Forget installation CDs. They just make things worse IME, and you can do all you need to do from the web interface of the device.

Is your wireless router an ADSL router you use instead of your modem, or is it ethernet connected and you add it to your router?

The router doesn't actually need to do any authentication to connect to Internet as this is actually done by the ADSL modem. Credentials that were being asked for may have related to a PPPoE connection which is not relevant as you do not have such a connection. The WAN interface on the router should be set to static, and a static IP address assigned, or to DHCP, in which case the DHCP server in the adsl modem will assign an address to the interface.

P.S. Never use install CDs, they only make ignorant people more ignorant.

Are you using the dual SSID stuff with the hotspot at all?

What IP range is the telecom router giving you on the computer when directly connected?

Not sure what you mean here. Havent seen any options for a Dual SSID unless you mean my Network name + Tomizone hotspot? In that case no im only trying to do my network and not Tomizone.

Not sure where to find the IP Range?

Setting up Wireless has never been a problem, Ill try abit later tonight without the CD.

BTW Thank you for all your help on both my threads :)

Yes, thats the dual SSID, I think some of the dlinks lock the second one to tommizone as some marketing deal with them.

IP range can be found by running a command prompt and typing ipconfig, you will see a default gateway, ip address and a subnet mask.

the 2 routers have to be operating on different ranges or the wireless router will get confused and not know where to send stuff.

cascading routers is always problematic and unless there is a specific reason that you want to do so, I would suggest connecting the lan ports together, _AFTER_ you have turned off the DHCP on the dlink wireless router and made its wireless secure. You will have to change its IP address as well to one in the range of the ADSL modem.

As I type this message with a big smile on my face I have managed to get a wireless network back up and running. All I did was go onto 192.168.0.1 and set it up from there instead of the CD. My only worry is that when I wake up tomorrow it will be gone for some reason but I highly doubt that :)

Thank you everybody for your help. :)
