Hi,

My house has a LAN wired in the star type layout with typically 4 cat5e cables + 1 RG6 cable to each room. Just wondering what my options are with getting Sky and Freeview (high def) distributed around the house.

Thanks,

Nick

HDMI over cat-5 adapters if your runs are short enough. Takes 2 cables.

convert down to component and run that over a single cat-5 with active or passive baluns, but needs something with spdif in at the recieve end.

Alternatively look at something like an HDHomerun coupled with a HTPC. The homerun tunes the DVB-T signal and then transmits it digitally over the network. Most media front ends (e.g. WMC, MythTV or XBMC) have support for the Homerun along with software like VLC.

Transmitting Sky is a bit harder, they have just announced iSky which might suit your needs.

Do the TVs which you want Freeview at have built in Freeview tuners? If so, then no distribution is necessary, just a UHF signal on the RG6 cables you have there.

Distributing Sky (nonHD) can also be done over the RG6 - won't be awesome quality, but then, nonHD sky quality isn't great anyway. Or as mentioned you can use Baluns and transmit Composite, component, or HDMI over CAT5 (HDMI requires 2 cat5 cables).

Hi there, thanks for your replies.

A few more questions -

So, Freeview HD (UHF) can be transmitted through a single RG6 cable?  One RG6 from the distribution point
to every TO?

F-connecters should be used for video outlets?  The guy that was doing mine used the old coax TV push-in type.

With the Sky over cat5e, what type of equipment should I use?  Can someone point me to a distributers   website or shop please.

Thanks,

Nick
