For anyone else reading this thread the wires can be terminated by using a plastic card something like a credit card when there's nothing else available.

Cut a small slot about the thickness of a hacksaw blade and about 10 to 15 mm long into the plastic card. The length and width of the slot may vary slightly, but keep the slot as narrow as possible. To ensure the correct slot size check that the slot will fit past the plastic up stand on the terminal and down over the metal contact that pinches the wire. Check this before you attempt to terminate the wire.

Cut the wires to be terminated to length leaving enough length for the wire to overhang the terminal by about 5 mm. Don't be too stingy and cut the wires nice and neat and short. There will be another time when you need to re-terminate the pair so leave as much cable as you can as a loose tail prior to the terminal.  A longer tail makes it easier to work anyway.

Place the wire across the mouth of the terminal and press down with the card as you would for any other termination tool making sure the edges of slot you cut in the card pass down either side if the metal contact. Take it carefully being careful the card doesn't twist and slip past the wire without pressing it into the V slot in the metal terminal that pinches the wire.

This part should be obvious but when the wire is pushed into the V slot on the terminal the metal terminal cuts through the plastic insulation to make contact with the wire. There is no need to strip the wire first, though if you did it shouldn't matter. Also pushing the wire down with a screwdriver can result in the screwdriver blade getting jammed in the V slot and opening that slot up this making it difficult to get a successful termination and you may need to replace the jack.

Hard to see exactly from the picture , but why don’t you remove the skirting outlet next to it, that may unreal the phone cable.

You are right, but I’m not sure what it is exactly and imagine it’s the cable feed for Vodafone tv, and a bit nervous to mess with it in case it’s something live and or we lose the TV. It’s a hellish spot to get into, dark with wires all over the place, thus the dust. Was mortified when I saw the photo closeup. I might have another closer look in the morning.

Thanks but no, am in Southern. I’ve ordered the tool now so may as well wait. Will give it another shot in the morning to see if I can maybe move that other case next to it.

Ah too bad. It's not hard - you'll get it back into place as long as you can see things that small and the area is lit up enough (things I battle with lol).

Just undo the two screws, its safe and fairly robust. Hard to damage as long as the cable is not tight in the hole in the floor.

Dont use anything but a Krone tool.

From someone who has replaced countless jackpoints from clever-clogs home owners trying to do it themselves. The tools are cheap, just get one.

Ta Daaa! 😅 unscrewing the box next to it freed it up. Needed brute strength to unscrew but am so happy it worked. Now I will move the jack to behind the sofa, but it will then have a long surplus cable, so I have the choice when the tool comes of cutting and trying to reinsert into the jack or rolling up the excess cable and letting sleeping dogs lie.

Big thanks for all your different angles and support! I learnt a lot.

A Krone style tool is definitely the best option, but at around $30 for the one linked above I don't consider that cheap for a one off job. Even the cheaper option at around $10 is borderline.

There are other makeshift options similar to what I posted above can work quite satisfactorily to get you out of a bind when you need to terminate and don't have a Krone tool or equivalent. You just need to take things carefully and not be a gorilla. I know because I have used this type of method quite successfully.

I would be willing to bet the countless jackpoints you refer to were damaged by hamfisted attempts to terminate the wires, probably using a screwdriver.

Well done. As you've discovered there's often more than one way to solve a problem.
