CutCutCut: I'm a tad confused, you can get the new kindle wifi but you have to pay an extra $30 US if you are non-US, and that covers postage? And if you want 3G you have to get the older model with the keyboard if you are non US?

I found the price difference a bit confusing but I think the $30 difference is so you don't have sponsered adverts. Below is is how Amazon outline what you have to put up with for your $30 saving:

Special Offers & Sponsored ScreensaversYou'll receive special offers and sponsored screensavers directly on your Kindle. Examples of past special offers include:
  • $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
  • Save up to $500 off Amazon's already low prices on select HDTVs
  • $1 for a Kindle book, choose from thousands of books
Your offers display on your Kindle's screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don't interrupt reading. You have control over your offers experience: you can set your personal Kindle Screensaver Preferences to give us hints on the style and types of sponsored screensavers you'd like to see.

crackrdbycracku: The Fire looks absolutely amazing.

A real 'tablet for the rest of us' with all the stuff you want for media consumption without trying to be a jumbo smartphone.

This is what has put me off about buying a tablet so far, it's like my phone but bigger so why buy one?

The Fire is actually lighter than an iPad!

The Prime Service also looks totally amazing. Who needs piracy with something that good? Particularly that you can watch movies on more than one device. Hopefully, that means a Kindle app and account would give you the same access across Fire / phone / PC or Mac / TV.

And the killer is that it is half the price of an iPad!

I don't think this is going to 'beat' the iPad but that is actually the whole point, one probably to be missed by the mainstream press. Instead of trying to copy the iPad and doing a rubbish job like everybody else Amazon did something actually different. People will still buy iPads, but they will also buy the Fire. I'm guessing by the million.

Not bad for a company which started off as a mail order bookstore. Maybe that's what it takes to (can't resist): Think Different.

CrackedbyCracku

The fire is lighter than the ipad, because it is smaller and probably has a smaller battery. The ipad is largely a big battery which is heavy, which is why it has such good battery life.

freitasm:

The prices are all in US$. The Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire are not available for shipping overseas

The Kindle WiFi is US$109 for international customers, plus shipping. Go through the shopping cart and you will see the shipping costs before you order.

All prices are listed on the amazon.com pages you land on when you click the links. All prices are in US$. We don't sell any of those products, we only link to them and receive an affiliate commission.

 All prices are in US$.

One thing to be careful of is that you do not place the order in NZ dollars. Their exchange rate is horrific. Far better to order in USD (can change it on the last screen) and have your bank do the currancy exchange. I know this after just purchasing one on the 17th! :( oh and for those wondering on delivery time ordered on the 17th (Sunday) arrived on the 22nd (Thursday) considering the timezone difference ie it was ordered on a Saturday in the US I was blown away by how fast it was delivered. Just wished I had waited a week.. ah well.

Looking at a second kindle, but you cannot get the lighted case for the new kindle wifi. It will not allow shipping to NZ.

Ohh I see. I've always found the Amazon website hard to navigate, and a little confusing to work out what exactly ships where and who is selling it, maybe I just haven't used it enough.
Those shipping times are excellent.

I so want to hold one side by side with my Kindle Keyboard (shown left in pic above).

Have resumed reading a LOT since buying my Kindle. Maybe I need two - one to leave at work and one to leave at home? lololol

That was not a Special Offer Kindle. Cost was US$107 plus US$30 shipping (had two kids' books in the box).

I don't know how much in NZ$, as I paid in US$.

I see.
How were you able to pay using USD or set up your cc to use USD ?

I've never ordered from overseas mind you.

Oh and is the battery user replaceable ?

On the Kindle 3 it was but not easily.

I actually like the look of the old kindles over that new one, it has that nice mat plastic finish. If that new one isn't touch screen, how do you type in text if it just has a few buttons on the bottom?

There isn't much typing on the Kindle, really...

Well, the hardware keyboard was handy for entering my IP setup (I use static). Aside from that you really only need the keyboard for search or for entering annotations. I've found the 6" screen to be too small for technical books, and who searches and annotates fiction? Surprisingly, some people do. If you're one of those people, the keyboard model would still be the best choice (of course there is an on-screen keyboard on the new models, but - unless you get the touch screen - text entry isn't going to be a great experience).
