Can‘t edit anything, I found it in an email addressed to me and that‘s per year.

That's odd. I have an "edit" button at the top right of all my posts.

I have it only for 30minutes or so, but not afterwards. My post was done a few hours ago (all posts I see are stamped with my correct time zone).

Ah. I think I can edit my own posts without limit. Might be something to do with one of the status's I've picked up over the years here.

So I thought I'd look at the likely cost of running a single Echo per year using the information from ZDnet article

In the article the guy gives a US electricity price of US$0.13KWh and based on bench tests with 2hrs of audio playback perday a cost of US$0.40 per month or US$4.80 a year

This means he's calculated the Echo will consume 36.92KWh pa

Flick's flat rate is NZ$0.1738KWh

Therefore an Echo will cost about NZ$6.42 a year to run

Tinkerisk's figures: Amazon Echo (4. Gen.) 1,9 W 16,60kWh

So thats just standby, 'average' use more than doubles it

I think this statement is pretty much spot on and something I'll bear in mind

Tinkerisk:

It may not seem like a lot, but everything together with the smart speakers, gateways, etc. will be quite a lot just for standby.

How deep does the rabbit hole goes....

Very good advise on here so far, so only 2c I can add is that try and stick with one brand per protocol, especially when using HA. HA can get overwhelmed quickly if you are not running it on a decent enough system and more brands also means more integrations that you need to run and try and talk to each other.

Aquara is pretty reliable and I run a few of their sensor through a conbeeII stick and Deconz integrations.

I have about 80 devices now running through HA, including car battery monitors, my dishwasher etc xD

Note on local/cloud - Alexa can not do local voice recognition without a hub and even then requires the cloud to talk to HA - get at least one google device as this can be set up locally.

Also looking at getting a dedicated tablet mounted somewhere in the house for family control - my wife doesnt like the voice control so much, so prefers buttons still.

My current projects include power and water consumption monitoring and cameras.

On presence detection, as timmmay mentioned, per room presence detection is not ideal - I did away with it as it caused more issues then anything else and there was no real benifit. I currently only use rules and automation for geo locations - ie if I am away from home but the wife is at home, everything remains, if we are both away then certain sensors get disabled/enabled (door/window sensors, etc.).

A good one is an automation that will tell you if the inside of your house is hotter then the outside, so instead of turning the AC on, it will prompt me to open windows.

There is so much you can do! this is only the start ;)

I think I'm going to be referring back to this thread for a while. Lots of details that feel like they will make a difference.

Love the outside inside comparison, thats smart

Some inspiration for you - this is my kitchen tablet - note text to speach for echos work in HA so you can basically make alexa say anything with automations

That's a nice dashboard! Can you tell us more about your Echo integration? I considered that, but my understanding is your HA instance has to be accessible on the public internet to make it work.

That is correct, your HA needs to be publically accessible - I used duckdns but have a fixed IP as well.

You could also use Nuba Casa (at $5USD per month) with home assistant or you could use the alexa integration (just takes a bit more work to set up) if you dont want to spend the $5US monthly.

From there you will have access to loads of sensors for each alexa device as well as text to speach from within HA environment.

When I leave work alexa announces all over the house, if the wife is detected home, that I am on my way home - I have various zones set up that updates her on my journey as my commute is about an hour.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Interesting... I have a static public IP, but I have HA on the private network not accessible from the internet. I looked at the Alexa documentation, the HA instance needs to be accessible from the internet on https / 443. I could set that up on the Fritzbox easily enough, but I'm not sure how secure HA is. I could do something like use CloudFlare tunnels and use their WAF, but not sure I can be bothered right now.

Yip, lots of people use cloudfare as well, so many options that one can use. There use to be a dummy amazon server file back in the day that would make alexa work locally but amazon clamped down on it :(

What a great thread! I've just read through it and picked up a lot of great info. I fell down the rabbit hole around six months ago. It all started when I looked into controlling my garage door remotely. I picked up a Shelly 1 and a reed switch. Installing home assistant felt like the logical next step. I've now integrated around 40 devices.

A few of my favorites:

Shelly dimmers, 2.5's and 1PMs. They've been great once I pulled them into HA.

Remote monitoring of my 3d printer via Octopi intergration

BBQ probe temperature notifications, including voice announcements (not popular with the Mrs)

Our Paradox alarm system previously had no remote access. An ESP32 and a really reliable integration called PAI has given us full control and monitoring, and the ability to use our hard wired motion sensors in other automations.

I've just started down the ZigBee route. I've got a Sonoff 3.0 coordinator, and a couple Aqara sensors . The next project is to integrate the lock state of all our sliding doors, by installing microswitches in the door jambs, which are hard wired into some Aqara door sensors that I'll hide in the wall cavities. I've also got a ZigBee blind motor on the way that I'm going to have a play with.

I'd recommend installing mushroom cards via HACS. It's made modifying my dashboard a fair bit easier. I've got no  coding experience, so figuring YAML out has been slow. I really need to sit down and learn it properly.

Hi, am also in titirangi and have HA running with Samsung smartthings, alexa, and a bunch of zigbee/zwave devices (in-wall light switches, garage door controller, window sensors etc), frigate for camera Nvr & object detection. HA also runs as my alarm and is all controlled from mobile phones (remote or local), or an android tablet framed on the wall. Also have some aqara stuff, just the temp/humidity sensors now and a power socket. Used to have more but found them a bit painful when not using their hub (which I also had but didn’t like).

Let me know if you’re interested in knowing more or potentially having a squiz, always happy to meet someone local who geeks out on this stuff also!
