Harvey Normans are currently advertising 10% off iPod Touch when you preorder, and since you hardly ever see discounts on Apple products my ears pricked up. On Friday night I called my local store to check that they were still taking preorders and that stock hadn't already arrived. The sales person told me that stock hadn't arrived, and then even when it did it wouldn't be enough to fulfill the preorders they had already taken. He urged me to come into the store, put down a deposit and then just wait it out for around a month. Since this is to be a xmas gift, I was happy with this.

I went to the store the next day and went to place my order, but the sales person told me he wouldn't take my pre-order! When I asked why, he told me that in all likelihood they would probably 'never' receive enough stock to fulfill my order and that I would then 'hate them forever'!! I told him since I wasn't in a hurry for it, I'd take my chances and he once again tried to refuse telling me they'd been waiting on them since April and would likely never actually received 'more than two or three units'. 'But they've only recently been announced and only released here within the last week' I argued. No, he told me, Harvey Normans have known about them since April!! Don't you just love it when sales staff make stuff up?

In the end I had to practically force him to accept my pre-order. I have no doubt it will come through fairly soon since Dick Smiths are already showing stock in several stores. I just thought I'd share this amusing anecdote. I'm wondering if Harvey Normans were banking on a swift stocking up so wouldn't have to take too many 10%-off preorders and now head office are encouraging staff to steer customers away from it?

Atually, come to think... I can guarantee Steve Jobs called Harvey Norman back in April to tell them about the iPod touch... Yes, seriously. He even talked to this sales person directly...

Man I hate it when customer service folk don't know their stuff and just make it up instead of actually saying "I'm sorry, I don't know, let me find out for you".

I've had a few of these in the last year, even to the extent that I've been told the product I'm looking for "doesn't exist"! Its hard to be an expert consumer sometimes. . .

pre-ordered mine from HN yesterday. The guy said I would be lucky to get it by christmas. Even though there are only 10 on the list for that store. I think they are scaring people away from pre-ordering because they are getting stock soon...

Sounds borderline illegal advertising practices to me. If you are advertising a special you need to have reasonable stock, you cant say oh we have 50% off on this one unit and all other units we have now sitting on the shelf are full price as the "special" is over.

To a degree he's right. From personal experience, the ipos (spelling intended) distributor struggle to supply at the best of times. Whenever I placed an order with them, there'd often be a waiting period of months for even basic stock like 2gig nanos. Whenever I asked about it, they would either say that demand was too high or they just couldn;t get any direct.

Was rubbish dealing with them in general.

Still, pretty unfair of HN to refuse pre orders, but don't expect too much of them, either.

Well, I spose atleast the salesmen warned you about the shipping date, I went into Harvey Norman and pre-ordered 3 weeks ago and the guy told me that the stock was arriving late september and that I would get it by early october, still haven't heard a thing about it from the store. From what I gather the electronic stores (HN, DSE, JB-HiFi) have all recieved stock but have since sold out and are puzzeled as to when they're getting another delivery.

Right well, apple stuffed round with all NZ retailers with all of their new items and the stock is only dribbling in. We've had a few people come into dse wanting to pre order and were pleasantly surprised when we said a month max as other retailers are quoting next year, which is frankly idiotic.

There have been many back orders but the longest wait we've had is the 160gb ipods are yet to arrive... but still... some stores really need to tell their staff more, or the staff need to be more informed themselves... silly people!

Oh, and we had pre-order deals too, but only for a specific amount of time, which I think was similar to Harvey's actually

so pebbles are you suggesting that there should be no problems with authorised retailers receiving a fairly good supply of stock before xmas?

Retailer dependant I would say. Try and find an Apple retail store, they'll have it, and then just find the lowest price and ask them to match it
