BerG: Ah cheers guys.

All the phones on trademe saying they only worked on vodafone had me confused.

There is no way an iPhone could only work on Vodafone. If it's a foreign device and locked it won't work on any network here. If it's unlocked it will work on any network.

I will probably get my iPhone 4S from Australia as my wife is going over just after it is released so pre order now and get sent to where she will be staying. They are unlocked when sourced from Apple's Store in Australia

On Apple's Australian website they're stating that they're unable to accept Credit Card with a billing address outside Australia, so how are you going to do that?

I didn't notice this :-( I'll have to ask my Mother/Father in law to use their CC then (as thats where my Wife is going to see)

When my wife goes over I don't think they'll have any in the stores left for her to pick up. (A couple of days after the  launch) so picking up from a store I would think would be impossible.

Thanks

I think I may have found a loophole through this, I have successfully placed my order.

Just a side note how much were the 16gb and 32gb iPhone 4's in Australia?

joker97: you can't "just pick one up" dude!

there are only a few designated stores ... and they receive shipment every other week or so ... and you need to queue up when they open that day and hope they don't sell out when it gets to you :)

good luck!

PS - shouldn't this thread be renamed "iP4s NZ non launch"

Meh, I'll go to the apple store in Sydney and but one outright. If they have stock and are willing to sell it, great. If not, I'm no worse off than I was before. I sure as hell won't be auditing like some muppet though.

I find it interesting that Vodafone always get the blame for things that in many cases are dictated to by Apple. Vodafone's weakness is that they're not willing to stand up to Apple for obvious reasons it's in Apple's interests to have limited supplies and queues.

Why is everybody looking at Vodafone for the launch? Apple have their own online store and retail presence in NZ with stock also sourced by numerous retailers from Australia.

You've mentioned this a couple times now, I'm curious as to how having limited supplies and queues are in Apples (or anyones) best interests? If they had more stock on hand, they'd sell them, less queues, everyone would be happy.

Also, iirc, VFNZ had exclusive access to sell the iPhone 4, (for re-signs and\or new contracts only) for several months until it was made available via the NZ Apple store and a handful of other retailers, when stock permitted. I'd say there's a reasonable relationship between Apple and VFNZ to pull that off.

Maybe marketing.

News headlines such as "Thousands que for iPhone launch" and "iPhone sells out in just 3 hours" probably make people think it is a truely awesome phone.

Thats not quite correct. You could order it from the Apple Store on launch day, but there was a long lead time for delivery (approx 4 weeks, IIRC).

hype + demand x scarcity = manipulated PR.. Its very much in Apples interest to restrict supply, to drive up both demand and their monster PR machine. Its also why they  religious maintain margins & donmt really allow retailers to discount their products as it devalues brand perception.

If you think Apples in the game to make "people happy" I think you misunderstand capitalism. Their goal like most, is profit, profit, profit.

Your last  point proves it, Apple could hand them out like candy from their website at a lower cost, but why would they?

A bit emotive. They have a great business model, thats a clear fact, irregardess of your opinion of Apple.  Re profit, that applies to all businesses in capitialism. Re the supply at launch, you are talking milloins of devices on release day, I am sure if they could have made enough to satisfy that launch day demand, they would. There is no gain to be made by intentionally short supplying.
