rhysb: Are you running Forefront Protection for Exchange at all? I've had two Exchange servers with excess traffic and it turned out to be the Kaspersky engine stuck on each one. It was downloading about 160MB each hour on https.

Hi there - We're not running this product no, but also the traffic is between an iPhone and the Exchange Server.

Those AV and security software run as plugins on the Exchange server so the traffic would still go to the server. Check that Forefront, Kaspersky, GFI Securit or anything else is running.

Perhaps the Exchange Store has a problem and sync fail for that mailbox? When was the last time you did a backup/consolidation on your server? Is it automated?

matts231: I've had these kinds of issues before. It's sometimes when sending a large email attachment that somehow fails over and over. The phone continually tries to resend it, creating the insane data usage.

He said attachments were disabled.

But not from sending. Something stuck in the outbox folder in the phone perhaps?

Morning Guys,

The Exchange Server is backed up nightly to tape so logs are flushed etc. Exchange 2010 is pretty good when it comes to corruption and is a big step up previous versions, but it's worth while running an integrity check which is able to be done online now via Power Shell. I'll check this out. It's interesting this didn't happen on his previous Nokia E72 handset, but Nokia's cut down ActiveSync client may well be doing less than the iPhone client.

I'll check out the Sync Conflicts folder via OWA which was an excellent suggestion and see if that points me in the right direction.

I'll post back after checking these items to keep everyone in the loop.

Cheers,
Jay

CYaBro: You could log in to their Outlook Web Acces and check the Sync Issues folder.
Any errors / problems should show up in there.

Just checked this out and sadly there is no information from the Sync Folders. I'm thinking this is for RPC or HTTPS/RPC connections only and not for ActiveSync....

Hey Team,

Hit this issue again with another staff member who was trying to forward an e-mail from an internal staff member to another internal staff member from their iPhone. It had attachments and it wouldn't leave the outbox. Thankfully the user saw the e-mail failing to send and managed to give us some more meaning information so we've been able to resolve the issue.

I felt it was worth posting into the forum to let other Exchange Admins know:

Found this event in the event log on the 16/1 which is the date of those failed e-mails ? being try all the time since?.

"An exception occurred and was handled by Exchange ActiveSync. This may have been caused by an outdated or corrupted Exchange ActiveSync device partnership. This can occur if a user tries to modify the same item from multiple computers. If this is the case, Exchange ActiveSync will re-create the partnership with the device. Items will be updated at the next synchronization.

URL=/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync/default.eas?User=james&DeviceId=ApplC36GJ1QUDP0N&DeviceType=iPhone&Cmd=SmartForward
--- Exception start ---
Exception type: System.Web.HttpException
Exception message: Maximum request length exceeded.
Exception level: 0
Exception stack trace: at System.Web.HttpRequest.GetEntireRawContent()
at System.Web.HttpRequest.get_InputStream()
at Microsoft.Exchange.AirSync.AirSyncRequest.get_InputStream()
at Microsoft.Exchange.AirSync.Command.WorkerThread()
--- Exception end ---."

A different user also triggered the same situations on the 3/2 @ 12:45 so his e-mail was constantly trying to resend and the e-mails the origional user sent where 11.5 and 12.1Mb each! After the changes below these both sent successfully without issue from the Outbox which proves the issue should be resolved now.

Turns out the limit for a message on active sync is 10240KB (10mb) regardless of the rest of the exchange enviroment settings and needs to be set independantly in a web.config file.

This means a user can receive the e-mail at up 15MB through active sync, then ask for a forward being blocked at 10mb and then it goes into a loop!

I've set this at 20480KB to exceed the 15384Kb e-mail limit at our customers site? this is still subject to the e-mail being re-wrapped so the iPhone shouldn't go into a loop anymore

I've found a number of other people on the web who have hit this issue with Microsoft Exchange, but sadly none who found the answer to the issue, so lets hope this helps someone else and keeps the phone accounts down!

All the best,
Jay

Its worth noting we have had the same problem where I work.

A user has a charge of over $2000 for data on their iPad.

Gen-I have sent a billing analysis, but to be honest, Im reluctant to think the user actually used all that.

First months usage for them was 2.7GB
Month after was 1.9GB
This month, >>25<< GB.

I had a look at the unit, and I can tell you now, 25GB did not go through that unit.

I'd like to know how someone would even manage to eat through 25GB of data on an iPad. I mean lets be honest, you cant exactly download installation files, linux ISO's or torrents on it.

Good luck to you then man, I sure hope this helps you guys out. We have discussed with our Gen-i account manager and made her aware of the issue. We are supplying full written details to her to share with other Gen-i accounts in the hopes others don't get stung like this!

Cheers,
Jay

Thanks for the post... I will have to check with the Exchange guru's at work about that.. Im pretty sure our limit is also 10MB (Or is it 20... I cant quite remember).

I will check the users iPad again when I get back into the office.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Good luck mate - I was very surprised to find that to change the ActiveSync limit this was a seperate file which needed editing. Doesn't fit with the usual well polished Microsoft environment. I would have expected Power Shell if anything, but a web.config file seemed insane! - No wonder this issue occurs when it's not the same as the limits imposed in the GUI for non-activesync operation.

Cheers,
Jay
