Very first impressions:

I was thinking a 1.3mm difference and 100 odd grams wouldn’t be that noticeable. But it really is. Naked this thing is ridiculous. For those who use it in the hand I do think it probably takes the larger 13” from being very quickly fatiguing to quite useable (bearing in mind I haven’t used it this way for any length of time). This will be meaningless to anyone who never removes it from the keyboard.

New Magic Keyboard certainly looks classier than the old one (which I don’t have, but have used briefly), and the trackpad is a good size. It looks like a nice laptop keyboard and trackpad, where I thought the old one looked a bit cheap. Initially quite difficult to open, I think there’s a bit of a trick to it as I’m already getting more proficient at it.

Screen looks nice, but haven’t really looked at enough content in enough lighting conditions to make any sort of real judgement just yet.

The strategy being run by Apple is pretty smart - probably produces max revenue. If for example they allowed MacOs on iPad > MacBook sales down and not compensated for by increased iPad sales.

Edit: Just saw this on 9to5Mac.

Both Macbook and iPad sales have crapped the bed recently. iPad sales were down 10% last year and MacBook down 34%.

The lack of innovation with iPads has been apparent for some years. I can't see myself buying another one for my own use. I'd much rather have a laptop or a phone at this point.

Apple still owns the tablet segment but the iPad Pro is pretty pointless for the vast majority of users.

Story on new iPad Pros unscientific bend tests.

After using it for several days I’m pretty happy.

Is it worth the upgrade from my M1? For me it is as this OLED screen is very very nice, and the lower weight when paired with the new lighter keyboard finally makes the whole package a more manageable size and weight. For most other people neither of these would be enough to warrant an upgrade if they already have a decent iPad, and those who genuinely should upgrade will probably find the iPad Air is better value.

The new magic keyboard is a lot nicer than the old one. Other than the aluminium construction, function keys, and bigger trackpad; it also has the iPad itself “floating” noticeably further back which makes the ergonomics feel more like a laptop than the previous one did. It’s the lower weight of the new iPad Pro that allows this change in form factor, otherwise it would likely tip over in the new position without additional weight in the keyboard. This is probably why it’s not compatible with the new iPad Air (because despite the name, the Air is thicker and heavier than the Pro). $699 for a keyboard is still robbery though.

All said, it’s a very nice device if you can afford it.
