Well, it finally happened. I managed to spill tea all over the front of my iPhone 5s.

I'm hoping I reacted quick enough to prevent/minimise damage, and a cursory glance shows that everything appears working as it should, including mic, speakers, Touch ID button & headphone jack. It was also in a case with a raised edge, which helped contain the tea to the front of the device. I am a little concerned there is the possibility of ingress through the front speaker & Touch ID button though.

As soon as it happened, I got some tissues to get the majority of the tea off, and followed it with a wipe down with a damp cloth to hopefully remove the remaining tea residue from the surface.

Is there anything I should be doing/checking to give my phone the best chance of survival? I've powered it down for now, although I did have power to it initially after the Great Tea Incident of 2014 so I could give all functions a cursory test.

I've read that some people recommend putting it in a bag of rice for a period of time. But how effective would this be in this scenario? Could there be potential residue that may be left behind. The tea was your garden variety Choysa teabag stuff, with some trim milk mixed in, but no sugar.

Ut-oh, you may have to get new phone, seeing that iPhone 6 is just around the corner...

(or you can put them in a bucket of uncooked rice, and leave it overnight, then the like of me - Chinese ;-) - will sneak in and fix it for you like "The Evles and the shoemaker" fairytale.

If it just went over the top, not into the headphone hole, or into the gaps between buttons, you should be OK.

If you notice a bit of stickiness, you could try spraying a bit of Surgical spirits in there (or meths).
I think the 5S has an indicator for liquid damage if you shine a light down the headphones hole (which I am convinced goes off if you put the thing in your pocket!)

Found a pretty good guide here. Apparently the rice trick is not a smart idea, and can potentially do more harm than good.

I think I'll leave it powered off for a few hours, and then hope its all OK. If not, I'll hope that my insurance covers a replacement, and slum it with my old HTC One X until I can get that organized.

Apparently the 5S indicator is in the sim compartment. Mine hasn't been triggered, so thats a good sign.

I'm not noticing any stickiness, but I'll keep your tip in mind.
