If you (not you, but someone who) are not yet convinced, watch Rossmann's youtube channel, just search Louis Rossmann.
I found the video informative, helpful and very interesting. You never know what you miss when you shut yourself off from things.

the connector of the LCD screen wasn't seated properly. the repair was to reseat the connector.
These people are also Canadian and United States customers.
Not sure if Kiwis would get the same treatment here when trying to get their stuff fixed.
I have watched a lot of Louis Rossman's videos and I feel sorry for the people that get ripped off by Apple over there.

Took Mac Book with no backlight to Apple store, got quoted $1200+ repair.
Took it to "Rossmann" who fixed it in 90s by actually looking at the fault and found a dodgy pin - bent back into place and working. Said normally would charge $0 for that sort of repair, but if owner wanted 100% fix, then would be upto $150 to replace part.

the problem i have with this video is you have rossmann who does a complete look at the problem with all the correct tools, then you have the apple genius employee who is most liking following a basic guide to look at key parts and then saying it will cost this much. Rossmann who has seen the problem 100 times while the apple genius employee just following a guide to look at basic things. Im not saying apple is in the right here, and there should be laws in place "right to repair"

I had a macbook pro display crack... nz apple service center wanted over $2000 to fix.
Jumped on ebay and bought a screen for a couple of hundred bucks, and fixed it in 30 minutes .
Best guess is that the Geniuses are told that time = money. They saw the liquid contact indicators and would have been told to not check further and just explain that it would be a paid repair. If the customer had pushed the matter and insisted that there had been no liquid contact then they probably could have got the device shipped off to a repair centre for a proper inspection with notes about the disputed liquid contact and got the mac repaired for free if it was in the limited warranty period or a much smaller than $1k fee if it wasn't.

There is a difference between diagnosing and repairing a fault and just swapping out parts because that is easiest and highest margin.
