I have been noticing that my iPhone 7 (2017) battery daily life has dropped from approx 1½ days between charges down to ¾ to 1 day. On checking my Battery health it says my Battery maximum capacity is at 80% and I should consider getting a replacement Battery.

The phone otherwise is in perfect nick and we do not plan on updating just yet.

On doing a phone around of six dealers in Tauranga, I noticed that replacement new batteries range from $55 to $150, with repair time between 30 minutes and 4 hours.

I then had an interesting chat to Apple on line, they quoted $85 via their Authorised Apple Dealer in Tauranga. Now that very same dealer had just quoted me $129 and it would take 3-4 hours due to all the pre & post replacement testing processes.

Of course the cheapest places I am very suspicious of the quality of the battery (non authorised/approved) whilst the most expensive is just a rip off.

My partners iPhone 7 is down to 83% so I reckon by the end of the year we will be up for replacement batteries and we will go through the Apple ordering and replacement service.

Not sure how many ASPs can actually officially open the phone to install the genuine battery (vs unofficially opening to install 3rd party battery). They usually add the extra $25 shipping fee for it to be sent to Apple, which obviously takes longer than same day.

Does it matter if it's genuine or not? Guess it depends on how much use you are likely to get from the phone, and also things like water tightness if appropriate for your model.

Mine was also draining really fast for about a week and then settled down again. Mysteries of Apple.

This site has a couple of articles on iPhone battery life extension maybe worth a read.

They only charge that fee if it has to be sent in. ie:Rural etc. I am 10 minutes drive away from my local Authorised Dealer/Repairer. So Apple provides an email Service Repair number and booking date and time and they notify the Authorised Dealer/Repairer and I pop in with that email Service Repair number, pays the money and get it repaired, as I have been told by Apple.

Ive used the Apple authorised Service Plus in CHCH to replace the batteries on 3 seperate occasions. Each time I booked over a week in advance via Apple and each time straight away I get an email from Service Plus confirming the appointment.

Yet each time I've gone in on my appointment day they have said "oh we don't have batteries in stock we will have to order one in and will take a week come back then" and I reply with "I made this booking over a week ago why would you not be proactive and get one ordered when I made my booking ready for my appointment."

"oh we don't work like that" they reply.

Makes you wonder about some businesses aye. Makes me wish we had an official Apple Store.

For an iPhone 7 and newer iPhone I’d definitely be going with a genuine apple battery replacement.
They have the adhesive holding the screen on for the water resistance and not many 3rd party repairers will replace that. And even if they do it may not be the same quality as Apple’s adhesive and so may not do it’s job if your phone got wet.
Saw this many times when I had my AASP store in Whangarei.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I totally agree with your sentiment re wondering about how some businesses do business...  Talk about being "customer service oriented and more efficient"...

Anyway, a couple of years ago I noticed a sudden degradation on my then iPhone 6S Plus' battery life.  From memory I think Apple offered a special price of something like $49 (or it may have been $69) for the battery replacement, given that it came about at the time when news came out about Apple slowing down old devices to force people to upgrade, also also at the same time there were issues discovered with battery life of Apple devices.  I took advantage of that, and booked in my phone with an AASP in Auckland (located in Mt Wellington).  Made the booking via Apple's website, received the email confirmation for the appointment, dropped off my phone, and whilst they had the part and as all ready to go, they've informed me for the price Apple quoted it was "standard service" which would take xxx days - can't remember the exact number of days but it was indeed days!.  They then said they do offer an expedited service which I could get my battery replacement completed in 2-4 hours if I pay an extra $40 or something like that.  I did take up the option as I didn't want to wait.  On hindsight I should have read the fineprint (if any) when making the booking etc and check out others so that I am not caught out in such a situation...

But yeah some of the AASP do try and be sneaky - they are after all about servicing and makes $$ from servicing I guess.

Contrast this with another instance where we had to replace the Mrs' iPhone 6S Plus battery (both our iPhones were bought at the same Apple Store in Hong Kong back in 2015).  We were in Singapore at the time and popped into the Apple Store at Jewel Changi Airport, they checked the phone, confirmed everything else was still working and only needed the battery replacement, and got it right underway.  We hung around Jewel and while Apple carried out the replacement, and about an hour of so later we received a text indicating the replacement was done, and paid the fee (was about SGD 80 I think).

I so really wish we have an Apple Store in the country indeed!
