I'm looking at getting my partner an Iphone 2nd hand, as there seems to be an influx on TM at present with word of the new gen. iphone potentially next week.
The question I've got is around "jailbroken iphones", what is a jailbroken iphone and can it be returned to normal factory state (ie as it was when it came out of the box)?

Jailbroken means you can install your own applications on it.

A iPhone, by default, is "locked" (i.e. you're in a jail) - This means you can only install Apple Approved applications.

A lot of people think "bugger that" and Jailbreak their iPhone. Then they can write their own applications and they don't need Apple's approval to run them.

Jailbreaking isn't to be confused with Unlocking. Unlocking is the process of allowing the phone to accept any Simcard. All iPhones sold in New Zealand (at least via proper retail channels) are sold unlocked.

If you jailbreak your phone you can at a later stage return to it standard "jailed" configuration again.

There is some element of risk in jailbreaking your phone and if it goes wrong, I don't think (but don't know for sure) that a warranty will cover you.

She's just wanting the bog standard iphone setup and has no intention of using her own apps, at least I know I can "reset" back to factory setup now. Cheers

There is a button press you can do anyway that will put the iPhone in recovery mode, then just need to plug into USB, and run iTunes, which will automatically recovery the device back to factory. There is little risk these days recoverying from JailBreak.

Be warned, if you remove your jailbreak on some older phones the unlock is also lost. Many people caught out like this. Then you are unable to connect to ANY network in NZ. The NZ sold 3g and 3gs are factory unlocked, so not an issue to remove the jailbreak and upgrade to latest os
