That's real interesting. I',m behind Carrier Grade NAT so doesn't that change the game? A quick searh shows it's aparently possible though challenging.

Am going to have to move on with this TK319. I think I'll buy another device...

Well yes. You never stated that. Only if you know your external ip can the sim tracker talk to your server.

You either need a static up, or install traccar on a vm. Or at the very least a tcp packet forwarder.

I’ve used the oracle cloud vm before. But found it a little under powered. Ended up writing a simple python script to take external tcp data exposed (ie port 5002 for me for the protocol I use) and via tailscale that is then forwarded to my internal server (would work for cg nat as well)

Thanks for carrying on the chat. I'm learning at an exponential rate. 😅

Reviewing the thread, I note your device isn't 100% stable. I'm guessing you do a factory reset, then edit those appropriate parameters listed.

My thought is if I can force a factory reset, it might solve the issue. There isn't any obvious button but I could potentially unscrew the cover. Maybe there's a jumper on the pcb?, in the same way as a PC mobo.

Otherwise if I can simply get the device online by whatever means, then it could be reset and configured by SMS.

What I think is a good idea on GPS devices, is an aerial wire. In this way, the device can be properly hidden and concealed but still work because of the aerial. Can such a wire be added to pcb? I suppose it has to be coax?

FACTORY# is my code for factory. The device responds: Factory OK

So, I notice the command is in capitals, but the response comes back in lower case. And it could easily be sensitive enough that it won't work unless it gets it in caps.

I'm wanting to go 4G and the ones I'm currently liking, look exactly like an automotive relay. For South America, Europe and Australia. What I need to know is does it include NZ?

FDD-LTE-BAND:1/2/3/4/5/7/8/28/66

Otherwise it's buy the "global" model. Have queried the seller

Yeah I haven’t investigated 4g ones yet. This one I have now isn’t as good as my old 2g one. That was rock solid. And able to record and post at higher frequencies (handy if you want overspeed alerts). Current one I can get 10 second record time and 30 second upload before it starts crapping itself

Yeah, sometimes older stuff has had more time to have had the bugs ironed out. Newer stuff can sound all great and wonderful but often hasn't had the polishing.

Well, had a moment of excitement this afternoon. I'd just switched SIM's back to Open-m2m. Then I noticed the red LED flash sequence was different. Hoping it was online or about to be, I quickly logged into the Open-m2m portal and SMS': FACTORY# (restore factory setting command). There was no response.😕

I might have found an important piece of the puzzle. I asked Bing-AI about CAT M1 and NB-iot capability:

The TK319-L device can operate on both LTE Cat M1 and NB-IoT (Cat NB1) networks. The preference between the two can be switched by a software setting in the manufacturer before delivery123. This means that the device can be configured to operate on either network depending on the specific needs of the application. However, it’s important to note that NB-IoT offers better building and obstacle penetration but cannot send as much data as LTE Cat M14. So, the choice between the two would depend on the specific requirements of your use case. If you need further assistance with this, I would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer or your service provider for more detailed instructions.

In messages form Open-m2m, they said they don't yet support NB-iot.

Anyway I bought a new tracker device. The seller assured me with my query:

Then I realized I'd need a supplier of LTE CAT 1. So I asked Bing-AI:

Yes, both Spark and Vodafone networks in New Zealand support Cat 1.

I guess I'll find out😆

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

But isn't the problem with cgnat in that you dont have a public ip....and since these devices work on pure ip (and not with dns......) then that's where they fall down.   A VPS helps - because you can expose a public ip for the protocol port (and lock it down to a mobile network).

Or a device that was able to use DNS, so you could push it behind noip, cloudflare or something like that.

Yes. I've gone into battle with cgnat before. When I needed a security camera remote view setup, I first discovered cgnat. Back then I used various tunneling programs to get around the problem, Noip, Teamviewer,  come to mind. These days I've upgraded to Dahua which works very, very well even behind cgnat.

Your old thread discussed CGNAT on Skinny VDSL. To my knowledge CG-NAT is no longer used on Skinny VDSL. Are you still using this connection??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Skinny fibre isn't CG-NAT either, it's just that they don't sell static public addresses.

Update:

Bought new GPS tracker device, CJ730Plus4G from Aliexpress for about $65 landed.

It turned up yesterday. Both my Skinny and Open-m2m SIM's didn't work but I could see that it had been online some 9 days ago in mainland China. So off to the Base, Te Rapa. I visited Spark, Vodafone/One.nz and 2degrees and learnt a fair bit. Spark didn't do "Pay as you go'' aka casual. Voda or 2degrees did offer it.

I bought a $2 Voda SIM, it reads 4G extended.

So I went through the motions of activating it online and topping it up. I popped it in the new GPS device and boom, it worked. No changing APN or nothing. Then I thought, maybe my old TK319L might work. Yep, it did. Again no messing with APN or anything.

Does it have an external antenna? GPS more than cellular

No external antenna. When I saw the multi-pin plug, I thought maybe one wire was an antenna but no.

Thinking about antenna logistics, I suppose aerials would be needed for both satellite and cellular, so that's 2 separate circuits. But at least then, the device can be properly concealed. Proper stealth.

Pondering APN. Should I attempt to configure it or leave well enough alone? Seems to be running well, only been up a few hours though.
