It seems to be or I keep thinking that we the users are the testers of the orcon genius or in other words the guinea pigs of the orcon genius.

Thats what I mean, I just don't get it? I think they have found that they are in the wrong and they are actually wrongfully metering us. Its just now they can't admit it?

They also told me that we can request a data graph, but we cannot give it to you for privacy reasons. I told them there is no use requesting a data graph if I can't have a look at it?

ISP's wont give you the traffic graphs becuase sometimes by looking at them you can see how and what sort of traffic is setup.
Network Operations of a ISP is private and will not be shared with customers.

Slingshot do this to, they can see what your doing but will not share this with customers.
Of course what happens with residential users is conspiracy Theory's start springing up....

One might think this is my connection what law is Orcon breaking.... well you don't OWN your connection Orcon do they own the IP address etc, you pay for the right to use their connectivity.

Thanks for the explanation Debbie point taken. That is what I initially thought as well it could show which connections that data is going through. But then how can Orcon prove that the usage that they are metering is correct? According to me and my usage meter the metering is incorrect, but all they are saying is that the usage is "accurate"?

Just got off the phone to Orcon who claim I have used the data which I definitively haven't. Call went around in circles
Wireless is secure
Antivirus on all machines
but they cant explain how I have used so much data and neither can I but still say I have used it
Where to from here?

One way could be to turn off the modem for a few hours or day, and then go back in to see if it has used any data while it was off. Obviously an inconvenience, but it is proof if it still shows data is being used when it is off. Depends though though if they display data useage by the hour, or just by the day.

The data usage is broken down by the day. So I would have to keep the router off for a full 24 hours. I am making a complaint to TDRS now. Lets see what they have to say

What Orcon told me is that the usage gets updated every 20-30 mins. So I guess for a up-to-date figure, you have to stop using the net for around 30 mins. So I guess you could also do what mattwnz has said above turn the modem off but for around 30 mins instead of a few hours?

If either of you wish to then PM me your account details and will take a look.

The graphs that have been mentioned can be shared there isnt really a reason why not that i am aware of.
Usage is reported in 15 minute blocks, allowing for processing time etc its just safe for people to say 30 minutes...

What sort of information are you hoping that an ISP could provide to you to support a claim of usage incured on your connection?
At the most basic level we count bits to and from your connection while there is an active session. Any and all bits passing a particular point are recorded.

If you are having ongoing issues and believe the accounting to be incorrect then as stated above we are likely to ask you to turn the modem off to make sure usage stops.
If it was a one off over 2 days then it would of course be next to impossible to work out what caused the usage as the event is over.

However let me know if you want me to check it.

HELP, SOS CALL HERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE!!!

Hi folks I have just come across that I'm also experiencing similar issues!! Not a happy chappy!

Usual usage 11-15gb per month yet last month 26gb with 10gb used on the 18/07/2012

2012-07-18370.16 MB10204.84 MB(9.97 GB)10575 MB(10.33 GB)2.34 MB
I'll be honest I didn't pick up on this at the time so paid it and didn't think much of it.

I logged into orcon last night to check my usage a got a sickly feeling as I saw this:

I then Check the more detailed version see below:

As you will see we're only 14 days into the month and usage is up to 38gb!! with 18.7gb used on the 31/07.2012 we haven't used this amount but what I have worked out is this issue only happens when using the wireless network connection. We using a wired connection no issue at all. I have downloaded Shaplus bandwidth monitor so I can see in real-time what bandwidth each computer is using.

Here's an example of data usage:

Wireless connection

Boot laptop Shaplus loads and I see .5mb is used, click google chrome, and go to facebook.com straight away up to 6mb which keeps increasing by about 3-4-5mb each time it refreshes. I then head over to download a file which is 5.7mb once clicked wham up to 40-50mb before the file has even finished downloading! then try a 19.1mb file up to 150mb in seconds!! I then tried Skype with my partners laptop and no word of a lie in less than 10 secs the bandwidth usage was up to 200+mb scary to see the numbers increase so fast!

Wired connection

On boot shaplus loads I see .2mb used, click google chrome, go to facebook.com only 1.8mb used and only increases by less than 1mb everytime refreshes. Then head to download the same 5.7mb as dl on the wireless connection and it show bandwidth of 5.7mb or there about give or take a mb for a new page opening up for download. Then head to the 19.1mb file and again just correct bandwidth used nothing excessive.

I did contact orcon (today) who have requested the data graph from the tech team so they can work out what data type was downloaded but obviously reading through the previous posts on this thread this isn't going to tell me much! Are you guys still experiencing the same issues and have you found like me that it is just the wireless connections to be the issue? I'm scratching my brain wondering what the hell is going on! I have even tried a different router I usually use the Home Hub (gigaset sx763) but have tried a Dynalink RTA1025W which acted in exactly the same way ok through wired high excessive usage via wireless!!

I really want a solution to this matter asap as we're going to be hammered with data usage charges which we haven't used on the next billing cycle!!

We have been away from home for 4 days late July and left the wireless connection on, when we got back usage for the days we were away was nil, for the start and end dates what we would expect for the limited time we were at home.

Orcon's answer to our usage was that we might have been seeding files (we were not) or our wireless network compromised by someone else outside (we have a strong password and closed workgroup/lan.

Checking the usage for August there are no spikes.

Both of our main devices have software network monitors for usage tracking

cdrpnz, have you seen the same behavior with other browsers?
Do you get the sam behavior on different devices, ie another laptop?
You listed skype as a test for wireless did you also check it on the wired connection?
I am assuming you are seeing the increases on shaplus.

cdrpnz: in less than 10 secs the bandwidth usage was up to 200+mb

Is that megabits or megabytes? That number looks impossibly high given the maximum capabilities of 802.11g.
