Just seems like too much of a coincidence with those identical upload/download numbers being around the limit of a 100Mbps connection.

All it takes to drop from a 1000Mbps link to a 100Mbps is a slightly dodgy connection in one of the wires in the cable.

Double check all terminated connections between ONT, modem/router & the computer you use to measure the speedtest. if you can, get yourself a basic network cable continuity tester. Doesn't have to be anything expensive or fancy for odd jobs around the home. Hell, you could even make up an adapter to allow a normal multimeter to be used to check continuity of the wires within the cables.

cyril7: Hi if you look at some of those terminations zoomed up some don't look fully home, and what do the outlets look like, very much an amateur job, maybe a sparkie job?

If those are dodgy connections then changes in temp during the day could cause a leg to drop and next your on 100Mb.

Try plugging the router direct into the ont in the cabinet, I presume it's elsewhere in the lounge currently, see if the drops go away, that would indicate a cable issue as mentioned

Cyril

Thanks Cyril. Yes it is a sparkie job unfortunately. When the house was built a few years ago, the sparkie made some questionable errors. As it seemed to all work fine for years, I just left it as it was. What I will do is find two new Cat6 cables, plug the modem directly into the ONT then connect the modem straight into my laptop via ethernet and test again. That way I can isolate the issue away from any possible dodgy connections.

Kind Regards,

Do you have the Gen 3 ont and using the flat ethernet cable between your modem and ont by chance?

It looks like a 100mbit link between ONT and modem.

but if its normally 1gig and slows down to 90mbps i doubt the OP is changing the Ethernet cable at those times.

It's more likely rf or a noisy ac transformer near that's breaking over the mark and making devices renegotiate.

It's what we typically see with the flat gen3 cables, thus the question.
Tech does install works perfectly, few hours late drops to 100mbit.

Okay team, so I did a test using two brand new CAT6 cables consisting of ONT -> Modem -> 2017 iMac (ethernet) thus completely bypassing my in-house cat wiring and this was the result.

So it seems to be isolated to outside my cat6 in-house wiring network. I guess all I can do is call Orcon and see if they, or enable, can do a check on my connection.

Ok, but you haven’t seen the 94/94 results late at night yet which was your original complaint

Regarding that, I will wait till that happens again and do the same ONT -> modem -> desktop test to confirm that it’s not my wiring. As the 94/94 result is intermittent (normally around 11pm), I will have to wait either a day, week or a month to confirm the results from my earlier test.

In saying that, I massively appreciate all the advice that I have so far received regarding this issue. You all provide invaluable advice, so it is very appreciated
