Oh Neil, boy can we have some discussions around this one, actually had quite a few with your Collegues and various interested parties on this exact issue over the past 3 years with the current FTTH deployments.... Different thread topic I think :)

Definitely think supplying a UPS would be stupid but setting up some form of diversion while offline service for a box with heavy power dependencies would be a good start for a service they are trying to market as comprehensive and innovative.

I agtee .Genius was sold to the public not specialist tech users. I doubt if users would have signed up if they head been told that if you have a power cut not only do you lose your telephone but for period of outrage all callers get told your phone number does not exist. Positive pre 20th century.

Sorry but this is people just "believing the marketing hype" Comprehensive and innovative your kidding right !!, in the IN world these are basic feature options and are in the cloud so that the customer has their services available in the event of loss of connectivity to the end customer device, even the Asterisk crowds have large number of Features available in the Cloud, this service with a couple of features is purely handled on the Box itself, and honestly if you believe this is comprehensive or innovative you have been sucked into the one true innovative thing that came out from this, which was the Marketing !!, good on them from a marketing standpoint and for me it does promote the technology good to see my my tax dollars doing some good here, just doesn't sit well from a technical point of view and this is probably the least innovative service on the market when compared to the other offerings, for me it's good price price point great marketing poor technically lacking in feature intelligence and lacks any IN capabilities, as my Friend as TCL put it why would you do this in 2012 ??

From our point of view this is our basic service set, the 2Talk crowd, ITalk etc all have similar are all IN based , IE they live in the cloud not on the local box... compare this list and others to this Call waiting , Voicemail and CallerID .... Yell

Example Basic features available -
Feature Name
Voicemail - VM to EMail
Speed Dials
Call Forwarding Options
(Always/Busy/No Answer)
Call Hold
Call Return
Call Waiting
Call Name Delivery
Last Number Redial
Do Not Disturb
Anonymous Call Rejection
Call Notify
Three-Way Calling
Call Forward Unreachable
Caller ID Delivery
Voice Portal and Web Portal for Control of services

Not sure what voicemail has to do with the 'IN world', assuming IN = Intelligent Network. Voicemail is a simple call divert on busy/not reachable/no answer service.

I think the issue here is that the divert to VM is accomplished by the very device that is unreachable, therefore  the simple call divert simply doesn't work.

If this (simple divert) happened in the cloud then it could also function in the not reachable circumstance.

Talkiet:
openmedia: This shows one of the major issues with Genius and personally it should be supplied with a UPS especially for any UFB customers.

So, should Orcon also be responsible for the active battery monitoring of the UPS, and then responsible for alerting the user when the power has failed so they can address the issue (if it's a local issue)? What about paying for the UPS battery replacement when they reach the end of their servicable life? SHould Orcon be resposible for that as well? Should they do an onsite battery replacement or send a new UPS every 3-4 years to the customer and then get the old one sent in (at whose expense) for recycling?

Should Orcon monitor the device (somehow) the UPS load to make sure the user isn't also powering a NAS or security system from the UPS as well?

My point is that "it should be supplied with a UPS" is a simplistic statement and all the issues I raise (and MANY more) would need to be considered first. As you can see, there's scope for a significant ongoing cost to just supplying a UPS.

Personally, (and I'm not sure this is what will end up happening) I believe consumers should themselves be responsible for providing power to their internet and VOIP gear and if an individual values communications during a power outage as highly as I do (for example), they will buy a cheap UPS and maintain it themselves.

Cheers - N

Yes

Yes

Any phone line replacement for POTS should work during a power outage.

The UPS capability needs to be built into the UFB endpoint that is supplying voip and designed to provide VOIP services during a power outage. A simple end user replaceable battery would suffice, but something that can be easily monitored and provide end user (and probably ISP) alerts.

Just my 10c

sbiddle: Genius has the VM built into the modem, it's not in Orcon's voice core. Because of this there is no way a call can divert to VM if the Genius isn't connected.

This has been made pretty clear in their marketing, but obviously is a downside if you have no power.

Really? You know that it's on the router as a fact or are you assuming. If it was on the router how come you can call there voicemail number too access your voicemail?

Not true, Voicemail is on the Orcon network.

The Genius modem itself is just a basic SIP client. All the smarts are on the Orcon softswitch.

We will be addressing the voicemail when not connected issue as soon as we can.

(The Orcon Genius is not 100% the same as the BoB2, which does have VM built into it)

Ahh I stand corrected. I was told when it launched you had opted to use the built in voicemail.

The softswitch we use supports these features also :-) Pretty BAU in the softswitch world.

Good work!

(seriously people, if you want company reps to hang around and help, how about giving them some gratitude every now and then? If they all bugger off, it'll be no-one's fault but yours)

Gah, you're making me reply above you :-P

To be honest this was not an issue that ever worried me with VOIP. We live in the world of cell phones. If people can't reach me at home they will try the other number. A power cut would only have my phone down for like a day max (not accounting for serious outages). If the message needs to get through it would. Ideally this would be handled on an Orcon server to mitigate this issue, but again it does not bother me.

Where I do agree though is that it should not say your phone number does not exist.
